Elective Course Description-HD 382 Participatory Action Research
HD 382 Participatory Action Research this class is designed to serve students
with enough research information, for instance, collecting data and analysis, consent
forms, develop research queries, literature reviews, research methodologies, and
formulate research conclusions for future research. In addition, the class requires four
texts that will aid in our research learning process. I must be honest, although, I was
excited with the title of this class, and believed that I would be challenged and learning
new research concepts, along with gaining from my professor resourceful techniques for
future research projects, I am saddened to say that this class did not meet my
expectations.
The class started with just myself and another student, who apparently was upset
about the number of students enrolled for the class, and instead of focusing on discussing
our reading on canvas, she chose to complain about the class number of students, the
class work, and I simply was not in the mood to engage with that type of behavior. About
two weeks later, a third student was added to the class, and at this point I felt more
comfortable during canvas discussions, however, my level of knowledge in this class
became stagnant. Our professor, which is unfortunate for me to admit, was literally nonexistent.

When turning in assignments my professor did not make any constructive

criticism, or helpful narratives regarding my class work, in ways that could push me to
better my work. If it were not for the class texts I would have not learned a single thing in
this course. Truthfully, I feel disheartened that I have to relate my experience in this class,
especially, when all of the classes I have taken at Pacific Oaks have exceeded my
expectations, including my very first on-line class (HD 363), which in fact motivated me
to become a student of critical consciousness. The journey at Pacific Oaks has been
excellent with the exception of this class (HD 383); however, I know that the last three
classes I am taking this semester will surpass my course experience with HD 383.
