Sanitary procedures & standard precautions outline

I.

Cleaning is defined as:


A.

Picking up items visible to the eye be it a substance (dirt) or an object (toy)

Ex: Picking up toys, taking out trash, picking up after art projects, and
sweeping, vacuuming, dusting.

If a cleaner is used it is only soap and water to wipe something
down.

Scrub then wash, then rinse if using soap and water.

Sanitizing is defined as:


A.

Killing germs on the surface of items.

Kills 99.9% of germs so if you come into contact with a surface you will
not become ill.

Ex: eating area, items used to eat with, bottles, toys that went into
mouths

Formula used to sanitize: teaspoon bleach/ 1 quart lukewarm water

Method of use: spray disinfecting solution, and let air dry at least 2
minutes then wipe dry. You are also able to just let it air dry.

III.

Disinfecting is defined as:


A.

A solution that kills 100% of germs on the surface of items.

Used to eliminate the spread of bloodborne pathogens and communicable
diseases
a)
Formula for disinfecting is: 1 tablespoon bleach/ 1 quart of
lukewarm water.

Method of disinfecting is to spray the cleaned area with
disinfecting solution, let air dry of a minimum of 2 minutes then
wipe dry or just let is air try completely.

IV.

Schedule for cleaning and disinfecting


A.

Center must be clean and in good order every day.

B.
Furniture, toys, cots, and other equipment must be washed or cleaned when they
become dirty.
C.

Eating areas will be washed and sanitized before and after each use.

D.

Bathrooms and fixtures must be in sanitary conditions at all times.

E.
Potty chairs must be emptied and rinsed and disinfected immediately after each
use with bleach and water solution after each child, each use.
F.
V.

Premises must be maintained to prevent or harbor vermin.

Storing cleaning and disinfecting supplies


A.

Bleach water solutions

Must be made fresh each day and emptied at the end of the day. When in
use for the day must be kept out of reach of all children, labeled, and locked up.

Any type of chemical or cleaner must remain in original packaging

C.

Must remain out of the reach of children

D.

Must be locked up if not in use

E.

Each chemical in the building must have a MSDS sheet completed and on site

Standard precautions
A.
Means: The steps or precautions a person takes to avoid and prevent contact or
spread of any type of bodily fluid.
B.
Purpose: To prevent the getting ill or spreading germs. This also applies to blood
and bloodborne pathogens.

VII.

Hand Washing procedures


A.

Roll up sleeves

B.

Turn water on

C.

Wet hands

D.

Apply soap

E.

Lather hands for 15-20 seconds (sing your alphabet)

Scrub finger nails, between fingers, back of hands, palms, rings, and wrists

F.

Rinse

G.

Dry hands with paper towel while water is running

H.

Turn water off with the paper towel you used to dry your hands

I.

Throw away toweling

Hands should be washed before and after the following


a)

Handling food

b)

Diapering or toileting

Hands should be washed after the following


a)

Coughing or sneezing

b)

Wiping a nose (yours or a childs)

c)

Messy art project

d)

Using the bathroom

e)

If they look dirty or you feel may need it

VIII. Diapering procedures


A.

Wash your hands

B.

Get organized- make sure you have all items needed

C.

Sanitize the area (wait 2 minutes to dry)

D.

Carry the child to the changing area

E.

Put gloves on if available

F.

Undress the child to the point of seeing the diaper.

G.
Undo the soiled diaper, open it and wipe the child from front to back until clean
with disposable wipes. Use a fresh wipe each time.
H.

Place soiled wipes in soiled diaper then put all items in a disposable bag.

I.

Close the bag and dispose of it in the proper covered trash can.

J.

Place a clean fresh diaper under the child and fasten into place.

K.
Remove gloves using the correct way and throw them in the properly covered
trash can.
L.

Take a disposable wipe and clean your hands, then dispose.

M.

Take baby and go wash babys hands with soap and water.

N.

Put baby to play in a safe area

O.

Put away all items that are left out after changing is finished.

P.

Go back and disinfect the diaper changing surface.

Soap and water first. Then bleach water mixed and let air dry.

Wash your hands.

Stay engaged with the child through this whole process talking to the child and
bonding with them.
IX.

Handling and injured child


A.

B.

If child gets a bump but no blood


1.

Check the child over and make sure they are ok.

2.

If needed apply and ice pack to the area to prevent swelling.

3.

File a report on what happened and what area was hurt.

4.

Make sure parents are notified about injury.

If a child gets a cut or bloody nose


1.

Put gloves on

2.

Keep other children away from the child and the area where the blood is.

3.
If child is old enough have them hold disposable toweling to bleeding area
applying pressure, if not then you yourself do so.

Once the bleeding has stopped dispose of all soiled materials and place
them in the proper bags or trash (biohazard bags) including the gloves you take
off properly
5.
Have child wash their hands or whatever may need to be cleaned and
dispose of those materials in the proper place as well.
6.

Staff needs to wash their hands as well and dispose of items correctly.

7.
If blood got on anything the staff then needs to put gloves on and use a
mixture of 1 tbs bleach and 1 quart lukewarm water to disinfect the area where the
blood was.

Dispose of items properly

8.

File a report with what happened and what area was bleeding and why.

9.

Notify the parents about the injury.


a)
If other children were involved make sure their parents are notified
as well.
