English 9 Syllabus
Course Overview
Welcome to 9th Grade English!
Ninth grade English class will provide a foundation for learning in language arts that students can build
upon throughout the rest of their high school years. Were going to focus our reading, writing, listening,
and speaking skills on two thematic units this year: Identity and Humanity. We will cover different types
of texts from current events to Shakespeares work, so be ready to dive into all forms of literary and
expository (also known as informative) reading and writing. Students will work to achieve the Common
Core Standards for Ninth Grade Language Arts and demonstrate understanding in Language (ie:
mechanics, syntax), Reading (ie: theme, central idea, character development), and Writing (narrative,
literary, and expository). Youll be making lots of choices about how to expand, explore, and assess your
own learning, and youll have many opportunities to read and write creatively in every unit.
Texts (An in-class set will be provided, but students are welcome to purchase their own to
directly annotate)
Quarter 1*: Night (Elie Wiesel), selected short stories and essays
*depending on schedule, students may or may not cover Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck)
Quarter 2: Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini)
Quarter 3: Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare)
Quarter 4: To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee)
*Damaged or lost books must be replaced by the parents.
