Making the Transition from a Total
Novice to a Successful Professional,
strategies for becoming a competent

in the nursing community, be
proactive, be sociable, ask a lot of

that the new nurse should not

only become submerged in the
orientation and learning curve
of being a new nurse, but to
play an active role in this phase
and to not simply sit back and
follow the guidance of others
without interest or motivation
(Cardillo, 2010). I can use this
guidance and instruction in my
first year of orientation as a
nurse, in addition to the
following years as an
experienced nurse. I believe
that it is always necessary to
enjoy what you are doing and
have a passion for your work,
because without this passion or
drive, the job becomes tedious
and chore-like, leading with
annoyance and closemindedness.

questions, and indulge in the

challenging process of becoming a
confident nurse. I believe that in
order to be successful and most
beneficial for the patients, it is
important for a nurse to work on
himself or herself as a person in
addition to expanding their
knowledge and experience as a new
nurse. This is something that I can
actively work on as a new nurse in a
new work place, and this book has
provided me with constructive
criticism and advice on how to
improve not only myself, but also the
care for my patients. Positivity and
motivation are essential aspects in
the successful transition to becoming
a professional nurse even when you
begin to question yourself and your
purpose (Cardillo, 2010).
