Birth to 2

nd

Grade

1. Complete the following required testing:


Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test
2. Hold a bachelor's degree or graduate degree from an accredited college or university and must
3. Have completed three (3) semester hours of credit in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family engagement; and
4. Have completed a program of preparation to teach such pupils that is approved by the board; or
5. Hold a license to teach such pupils that was issued by another state and approved by the commission.

OR
6. Hold an Elementary license, a secondary license, or a license to teach middle school or junior high school education, that is endorsed with a major in child care, and:
7. Have experience teaching pupils under six (6) years of age that consists of 8 semester hours of student teaching, 1 year of verifiable experience teaching pupils in a program
of early childhood education conducted by a public school, a public agency or a licensed private school, or equivalent field experience or practicum conducted by an accredited
college or university.
8. Have completed at least six (6) semester hours of courses in early childhood education.
9. Have completed at least six 6 additional semester hours of courses in early childhood education.
7. Have completed at least thirty-five (35) semester hours of courses in early childhood education for children who are developing typically and atypically consisting of:
6 semester hours in child development and learning, with the content of the courses covering diversity in culture, language and ability; AND 12 semester hours in early
childhood curriculum and program implementation that includes at least one course in each of the following subjects: language and literacy, mathematics and science, social
studies, and strategies for working with children with disabilities.
3 additional semester hours in early childhood curriculum and program implementation, consisting of courses in any of the following subjects: curriculum for infants and
toddlers, early childhood classroom management , integrated curriculum, play theory and creativity, positive discipline and guidance for young children, or technology.

AND
3 semester hours in family and community relations, including working with families; AND
3 semester hours in assessment and evaluation for early childhood education; AND
Except as otherwise provided in this paragraph, eight (8)semester hours of student teaching involving pupils in at least two different age groups, one of which must have
included pupils in the first or second grade and one of which must have included pupils of any age from birth through kindergarten. At least one of the groups must have
included pupils with and without disabilities. In lieu of completing eight semester hours of student teaching, a person may have 1 year of verifiable experience teaching pupils
under 6 years of age in a program of early childhood education conducted by a public school, a public agency or a private school licensed pursuant to Chapter 394 of NRS at the
conclusion of which the person was eligible for reemployment.

Elementary Subjects K-8


1. Complete the following required testing,

2. Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, AND
3. Have completed, pursuant to the provisions of NAC 391.095, a program of preparation for teaching in the elementary grades which is
approved by the Board. The program must include:
A. 32 semester hours of credit in courses in elementary professional education consisting of the following areas: 8 hours of credit in
supervised student teaching in kindergarten through eighth grade, and 9 semester hours of credit in methods of teaching elementary
subjects which must include methods of teaching elementary mathematics, methods of teaching elementary science, and methods of
teaching elementary social studies.
9 semester hours of credit in the methods of teaching literacy or methods of teaching language arts.
6 semester hours of credit in professional education course work which must include course work in at least two (2) of the following
subjects: Classroom management , English as a second language , technology , evaluation of pupils , child development, special
education , and social and cultural issues.

B. Eighteen (18) semester hours of credit as follows:


6 semester hours in mathematics .
6 semester hours in science .
6 semester hours in social studies .

4. Have Completed:
A. Three (3) semester hours of credit in education or curricular adaptation for pupils with disabilities.
B. Three (3) semester hours of credit in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family engagement.

Substitute Teacher
Substitute License

To Qualify for a license to substitute teach in


kindergarten through twelfth grade, a person must:
1. Be a citizen of the United States, or be a lawful permanent
resident of the United States with a valid Permanent Resident
Card.
2. Have earned a minimum of sixty (60) semester credits, or an
associates degree or higher, from a regionally accredited
college or university, as reflected on an official transcript.

Special Education
(Exceptional Students Teacher)

To receive an endorsement to teach


in a program of gifted and talented
education, a person must:

1. Hold a license for the level of education in which the program is offered; and

2. Have two (2 ) years of verified experience as a teacher in schools approved by the


department; and

3. Have completed twelve (12) semester hours of credit from an accredited college or
university to include three (3) semester hours of credit in each of the following areas of
study:

A. Characteristics and needs of gifted and talented pupils;


B. Assessment of gifted and talented pupils and programs for such pupils;
C. Curriculum in content areas for gifted and talented pupils; and
D. Methodology and strategies for teaching gifted and talented pupils.

Reading Specialist
To receive an endorsement to teach reading, a person must:
1. Hold a bachelors degree;
2. Hold a valid elementary, middle school or junior high, secondary
or special teaching license, excluding Business and Industry; and
3. Have at least sixteen (16 ) semester credits in reading to include
each of the following areas:

A. Foundations of Reading
B. Elementary Methods and Materials
C. Secondary Methods and Materials
D. Diagnosis of reading disabilities; and
E. A practicum in reading remediation.

Art Specialist
To receive an endorsement to teach art, a person must:
1. Complete the following required testing:

2. Hold a bachelors degree, and
3. Have completed three (3) semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family engagement, and
4. Have completed:
A. Twenty-two (22) semester credits of professional education which included:
i. Foundations of education;
ii. Methods of teaching art in elementary or secondary schools;
iii. Eight semester credits of student teaching; and
B. Thirty-Six (36) semester credits in the principles of fine and applied arts which included:

i. History of art
ii. Design
iii. Drawing
iv. Painting
v. Digital or graphic arts
vi. Ceramics or sculpture; and
vii. Photography or printmaking

Library/Media Specialist
To receive an endorsement as a school library media specialist, a person must:
1. Have a valid elementary, middle school or junior high school, secondary or special teaching
license, (excluding a business and industry license), and
2. Have completed a program for school library media specialists which has been approved by the
Board or a regional accrediting association; or
3. Hold a masters or more advanced degree in library science, with specialization in school
librarianship, from a school accredited by the American Library Association; or
4. Have completed twenty-one (21) semester credits to include coursework in each of following
subjects:

A. Organization and administration of a school library;


B. The cataloging and classification of materials for a library;
C. Reference, bibliography and information skills;
D. The use and selection of educational media for a library;
E. Childrens and young adults literature;
F. Computers in the library;
G. A supervised practicum in an elementary, middle or junior high school, or a secondary school
library.

Physical Education
Specialist
To receive an endorsement to teach physical education, a person must:
1. Complete the following required testing, if you do not hold a current, valid license from another state in this subject area (click here for reciprocity
information):

2. Hold a bachelors degree, and
3. Have completed three (3) semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family engagement, and
A. Have completed an approved program of preparation for teaching physical education in kindergarten through grade 12; or

B. Have completed forty-two (42) semester credits which must include course work in each of the following: i. Anatomical Kinesiology or Mechanical Kinesiology, or both
ii. The Physiology of Exercise
iii. Testing and measuring the skill and ability of a pupil in physical education
iv. The psychological or social aspects of physical education, or both
v. Motor learning or motor development
vi. Adapted physical education
vii. Movement activities for pupils in preschool and primary grades
viii. Movement activities for pupils in intermediate grades
ix. Advanced first aid or an equivalent course of study; and
x. Methods and techniques of teaching in each of the following areas:

a. Physical fitness
b. Team sports
c. Rhythms and dance or rhythmic activities for pupils in elementary school; and
d. Individual sports; and

C. Twenty-two (22) semester credits in professional education to include: i. Foundations of Education


ii. Methods of teaching Physical Education in elementary and secondary grades; and
iii. Eight semester (8) credits of student teaching in a composite program which must be split between elementary and secondary grade levels. All 8 credits of student teaching
could be completed at the middle school or junior high school level (6-8) and meet the K-12 requirement.
NOTE: If your student teaching was at the elementary level only or at the secondary grade level only, you will not qualify for the K-12 PE endorsement;
however, you might qualify for the K-8 PE endorsement.

Music Specialist
To receive an endorsement to teach music, a person must:
1. Complete the following required testing:

Praxis Content Area Test
2. Hold a bachelors degree; and
3. Have completed three (3) semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family engagement; and
4. Have completed a program for teaching music approved by the Board; or
5. Have completed:
A. Twenty-two (22) semester credits of professional education which included: i. Foundations of Education;
ii. Methods of Teaching Music in elementary or secondary grades; and
iii. Eight (8) semester credits of student teaching; and

B. Thirty-Six (36) semester credits in the foundations of music which included: i. Music Theory;
ii. The History or Literature of Music;
iii. Applied Music, including an area of specialization in Vocal or Instrumental Music;
iv. Conducting;
v. Techniques for Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, Piano and String Instruments;
vi. Diction or Vocal Techniques and Pedagogy; and
vii. Music Ensemble.

Educational Computer
Strategist
To receive an endorsement to teach computer-based applications, a person must:
1. Hold an elementary, middle school/junior high, secondary or special license and have
completed:
2. A program which has been approved by the Board for teaching computer-based applications; or
3. Twelve (12) semester credits which must include the following: A. Educational issues relating to
computers; and

B. Methods for teaching the integration of technology with curriculum; and


C. Methods for teaching computer applications or instruction in at least three (3) of the following
application packages:

i. Productivity tools such as word processing, databases and spreadsheets


ii. Communication tools
iii. Research tools
iv. Multimedia tools; or
v. Other applications approved by the Board.

School Counselor
To receive an endorsement as a school counselor, a person must:
1. Complete the following required testing, if you do not hold a current, valid license from another state in this subject area (click here for reciprocity
information):

2. Complete three (3) semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family engagement, and
3. Must hold a masters or more advanced degree in school counseling; or
4. Must hold a specialty credential as a National Certified School Counselor issued by the National Board for Certified Counselors; or
5. Must hold a masters or more advanced degree with a major in counseling conferred by a regionally accredited college or university and meet the additional requirements
noted below; or
6. Must hold a masters or more advanced degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university and have at least two (2) years of teaching experience or at least
two (2) years of school counseling experience and meet the additional requirements noted below.
Additional requirements for (4) and (5) above:
A. Must have at least two (2) years of teaching experience or at least two (2) years of school counseling experience
B. Must have completed six hundred (600) hours of a school counseling practicum, internship or field experience in grades K-12
C. Must have completed thirty-six (36)semester graduate credits in school guidance and counseling to include coursework in each of the following areas of study:

1. The process of individual counseling;


2. The process of group counseling;
3. Testing and educational assessments;
4. Legal and ethical issues in counseling;
5. Career counseling;
6. Organization and administration of school counseling programs;
7. Multicultural counseling;
8. Child and family counseling; and
a. The use of technology in education;
b. Exceptional children ;
c. Human growth and development ; or
d. Substance abuse and counseling.

School Psychologist
To receive an endorsement as a school psychologist, a person must:
1. Complete three (3) semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family engagement; and
2. Hold a certificate as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist issued by the National School Psychology Certification System of the National Association of School
Psychologists; or
3. Hold a graduate degree with preparation in school psychology; and
A. Have earned sixty (60) semester graduate credits from the required areas, and if necessary optional areas (See NAC 391.317): i. In the area of psychology and
education of the normal child:
a. Child development
b. Child and adolescent psychology; and
c. Theories of learning ii. In the area of psychology and education of the child with disabilities:
a. Abnormal psychology or
b. The emotionally disturbed or behaviorally disordered child iii. In the area of psycho-educational assessment:

a. Assessment of individual intelligence


b. Testing of individual personality or projective assessment, with practicum
c. Diagnosis and treatment of reading disabilities, with practicum
d. Standardized appraisal iv. In the area of techniques of intervention:

a. A practicum on individual counseling


b. The process of counseling v. In the area of experimental design
a. Statistics
b. Methodology for research
B. Have completed practicum and a minimum of a one-thousand (1000) hour internship in school psychology (refer to NAC 391.318 and NAC 391.319 for specific
guidelines and
options).

School Administrator
To receive an endorsement as an administrator of a school, a person must:

1. Hold a valid elementary, middle school/ junior high, secondary or special teaching license; and

2. Hold a masters degree; and

3. Have completed three (3) years of teaching experience in accredited K-12 schools; and

4. Have completed at least twenty-four (24) semester hours of graduate courses in the administration of a
school, including course work in each of the following areas:

A. Administration and organization of a school;


B. Supervision of instruction;
C. Development of personnel;
D. Finances of a school;
E. The laws that apply to schools;
F. Curriculum;
G. Educational research;
H. Internship or field experience in school administration;
I. Other courses considered to be part of an administrative program for educators; and

5. Have completed an additional twelve (12) semester hours of graduate courses which may include other
courses considered to be part of an administrative program for educators, OR hold a masters degree or
higher in educational administration from a regionally accredited college or university.
