Navigate Identity, Intimacy,
and Imagination in a Digital
World

Impact of Technology on Children to
Teens
Identity
Intimacy
Imagination

We are just the beginning of

the app generation.

EARLY CHILDHOOD INFLUENCE

See link for video

Kids are exposed to rapid-paced

games, TV shows, etc.

This conditions the brain to expect hyperstimulation.

Teens are reporting higher and higher
levels of inattention today.
What can be done to remedy this?
Is all technological exposure bad for
children?

IDENTITY

Rachel

IDENTITY IS A PERSONS
SENSE OF SELF.
Identity is normally explored through
ones own self discovery based on
experiences and expression.
Identity is an important part of
development
individuals who lack a clear
identity experience difficulty

forming intimate relationships

creating paths for themselves

achieving satisfying closure in their life.

HOW APPS AFFECT IDENTITY

Apps provide ready-made solutions
to problems, causing identities to be
more superficial.
Apps offer pre-planned ideas,
molding users into becoming
avatars of others.
However, apps offer approaches of
thought to people that they can use
to either
A.) expand their own identity or
B.) reflect their already created identity.

INTIMACY

Kate

INTIMACY: WHAT, WHY, & HOW

Intimacy is: Close familiarity or
friendship
It allows teens to form connections in
their everyday life through friendship

Adolescents usually develop intimate

relationships through social activities
club sports, theater and musical clubs,
neighborhood friends etc.

Technology eliminates the teens ability to

connect on deeper levels because
people are afraid to feel vulnerable.

TECHNOLOGYS
AFFECT ON INTIMACY

Couples find it to be more comfortable to

share personal information over text as
opposed to a face-to-face conversation
which requires eye contact (96)
Communication through the screens eliminates
the emotional risk

Cell phones allow people to feel connected

which decreases the people's desire to
connect in person
78% of adolescents own a cell phone in U.S.
which allows easier access to pornagraphy
Boys who watch porn are more likely to use women

Genuine eye contact is impossible through

Skype or Facetime

IMAGINATION

Kandyce

IMAGINATION

What is it?
Thinking Outside the Box
How you use your cognitive, social,
and emotional capacities to broaden
your understandings and enrich your
productions

Psychometricians use a test called

the Torrance Test of Creative
Thinking (TTCT) to measure creative
thinking

TECHNOLOGY AFFECTS THE WAY WE

IMAGINE
Instead of acting, this generation reacts
Adolescents only work within the
bounds of an app
if a hue of green is not allowed in a painter
app they have little choice to work outside the
limits

Kids recall images from sources such as

the TV or Internet instead of using their
own imagination
Boredom used to be a stimulator for
imagination
Kids no longer have this with constant
stimulation surrounding them

POSITIVE IMPACTS ON
IMAGINATION
Those who play video
games score higher on
the TTCT
Apps allow new ways for
exercising imagination.
This is seen in creative
ways to Snapchat, when
people create Vines etc.
