LIVING THINGS ( unit 5)

1- LIFE ON EARTH
The biosphere is the part of the Earth where we can find living organisms, like plants and animals

All living things perform the basic life processes :

1-.Interaction:

all living things detect information about their environment

they react to this information

2-Nutrition :

all living things take essential nutrients

these nutrients give them energy to grow and develop

3-Reproduction

living things can create new members

they reproduce in different ways

HUMAN BEINGS

Living organisms

they perform the basic life processes:

Interaction
We use the senses to detect information about the world
We communicate
We move around and do many things

Nutrition
We breathe air
We drink water and eat food
We eliminate waste products

Reproduction
We are born
We have children
Mothers produce milk for their babies

2-CELLS

Are the basic units of life

are very small

we need a microscope to see them

They are living things because they perform the basic processes of interaction, nutrition and reproduction.

They reproduce by dividing to form two new cells

They can be:

-unicellular organisms: bacteria or yeast
- multicellular organisms: trees, butterflies

Parts:

Animals

Plants

Membrane

Membrane

Nucleus

Nucleus

Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm: special organelles called chloroplasts

A cell wall: outside the membrane

How are cells organised?

In multicellular organisms, cells work together in different ways

Cells

Tissues: group of cells that perform a specific function

Ex. Muscle tissue
Nervous tissue

Organs: combination of tissues that work together

Ex. Heart, lungs, stomach

Systems and apparatuses: groups of organs that work together.

Ex. Circulatory system, digestive system

3- CLASSIFYING LIVING THINGS

The five kingdoms:

1- Moneran kingdom
Unicellular organisms: one cell

Bacteria

2- Protist kingdom
Unicellular or multicellular

Protozoans

Aquatic organisms

and

algae

similar to plants. They can make their own food

3-Fungus kingdom

Can be unicellular: yeast

or multicellular: mushrooms

Take nutrients from the remains of plants and animals

They can t move

4- Plant kingdom: multicellular

They can make their own food

They use energy from sun to perform photosynthesis

They dont move

5-Animal kingdom

Multicellular organisms.

They can move around

They cant make their own food
