A lesson for 3rd graders
Literacy, Art, and Social Studies

Lesson Overview/Summary
Essential Question: What is a public good
and service?
Students will learn what a public good and service is.
They will conduct research, write a paragraph
explaining their good or service and then create a
visual representation of their good or service in the
form of a paper/cardboard gingerbread man and
gingerbread house.

Key Concepts
1. Visual Art: Students will know how to
represent a community good/service
visually.
2. Literacy: Students will know how to
conduct research on a topic and write a
paragraph about their research.
3. Social Studies: Students will know what
a public good and service is.

Lesson Objectives
1. Visual Art: Students will create a gingerbread
house and gingerbread man to represent an
assigned good or service.
2. Literacy: Students will be able to write a
paragraph using complete sentences, proper
punctuation, and
3. Social Studies: The students will be able to
explain what a public good is and what a public
service is and provide examples of each.
