IN Academic Standards
_____In this part of our Math course, we will be focusing on Money Management and
Budgeting. Students will pair up with a partner and work out their own budget plans
together. Students will hear a little about making deposits and checking balances, as well.

GOAL of the Lesson


____Student will gain a better understanding and learn how to budget, save, and use basic
life skills involving money, through Math.

Materials Needed:
Candy coins, printed paper money, worksheets, simple budget cards, pencil,
paper, and calculator.

PROCEDURE:
1) Students will split up into partners or small groups.
2) Student will be given a worksheet, containing the basic necessities and wants,
such as fast food, groceries, gasoline, clothing, household appliances, and
etcetera, with the prices of each item.
3) Student will use their budget cards to decide what their money will go towards,
and what amounts they will be saving.
4) Using the candy coins and printed paper money, the student will then separate
their money, to demonstrate their knowledge of what money will be going where.
5) The student will develop a better understanding of how they can manage their
money and savings, deciding which items are important, for when they get a job
and are living on their own.

OBJECTIVES:
1. The student will be able to learn basic math calculations needed by handling
money.
2. The student will be able to create a budget list using a basic budget card, to learn
how to manage money.
3. The student will be able to manage and calculate how much of their total earnings
to save.

Assessment of student learning, including description of how you will


assess each objective:
Students will be working diligently within pairs or small groups, in
order to assess their own personal budget and savings plans. The candy coins
and paper money will be given to you, such as it would in real life, and
students must use their calculators and budget cards to calculate their
earnings, spending, and savings.
Students needing assisting accommodations will be taken into
consideration. Students will be given the opportunity to work with the
teacher, a partner, or a teachers helper.

Due to class time being limited to 50-minutes a day, this activity could
take two to three class periods to complete.
