Revolution. After
the Continental
Army defeated
British
Commander, John
Burgoyne, France
decided to help the
American cause.

17778
France provides
military and
financial
assistance to the
United States
during the
Revolutionary
War.

1783
Treaty of Paris:
The Colonies and
England have
now agreed to
stop the war.
Britain now
recognizes the
colonies as an
independent
nation.

1784-1787
Northwest
Ordinance
Established a
government
for the
Northwestern
territory,
outlined the
process for
admitting a
new state and
guaranteed
equality for all
states.

1786
Annapolis
Convention
Was a meeting
meant to discuss the
trade system within
the 13 colonies but,
only 5 states were
actually represented
in the convention.
The Articles of
Confederations
didnt have the
power to control
each states trade
system.

1787
Shays
Rebellion
A series of protests
during 1786 and
1787 which
involved local
farmer and their
complaints about
high taxes. The
rebellion was
present from NH
to SC and was lead
by Daniel Shay,
former captain.

1788
Constitution
Ratified
The US government
came to the
realization that the
Articles of
Confederation
werent working for
the nation.
Delegates from the
states came to work
out a way to enforce
the federal
government.

1789
1st US
President
After the
Constitution was
ratified, George
Washington was
elected President
of the United
States. During the
his election, there
were no political
parties.

1798
Alien &
Sedition Act
Four Bills that
were passed by
Congress which
were a result of the
Quasi War to
increase national
security. Many
argued that they
were created to
suppress voters
against the
federalist party.

1800
Jefferson
Elected
