Gender Studies Summative Assessment

English 10
-
Fall 2015
Due 4:00 PM on Tuesday, December 22, 2015.
You will create a two-piece project that displays what you have learned during the Gender Studies unit.
One piece will be
written
and the other will be more
creative/visual
. Each piece will cover
two
of the
three essential understandings from the unit. All three essential understandings must be demonstrated.
Three Essential Understandings
1.
character development over the course of a short story
2.
analysis of characters experiences based on gender
3.
cultural/medical/marital experience of the 19th
century
Success Criteria

All of the written parts of my projects are submitted


together on one document
to turnitin.com by
(or before) the due date.
My claims are concise and cover all parts of the essential understanding(s).
My projects include textual evidence from
either
Story of an Hour or The Yellow Wallpaper
(or
both)
My projects are carefully created, detailed, and show clear time commitment.
I use all of the provided class time.
Project Checklist

Step 1:
Select or brainstorm a creative/visual project.
Step 2:
Select or brainstorm a written project.
Step 3:
Create a plan/outline for each project and have it approved by your teacher.
Step 4:
Decide how you will split up the three essential understandings.
Step 5:
Write a claim for each of the three essential understandings and submit to
turnitin.com.
Step 6:
Create a creative/visual project that portrays your understanding.
Step 7:
Create a written project that portrays your understanding.
Step 8:
Submit projects to teacher by December 22nd at 4:00 PM

Visual Project Ideas

Storyboard
A storyboard is a visual representation of the most important elements of a story.
Your storyboard should include at least 6 scenes
Create a "before and after" visual representation of the main character
You may create your visual representations with any medium you wish.
You must create
two representations--
one of the character
before
and one
after a major plot event
Design a cover
create a visual cover image based on your interpretation of the story
Your new cover must be accompanied by a paragraph explaining your artistic choices.
Collage
Create a collage that
covers
at least two 8.5 X 11 sheets of paper.
The collage must use materials from
several different
kinds of media (magazine, newspaper, internet, 3-D
objects, etc.)

Written Project Ideas

Interview with the main character


Write a script for an interview with
at least ten quality questions and corresponding answers
between
yourself and the main character of the short story.
The script must include your questions as well as the subject's responses.
Prepare and perform a monologue
The monologue you write must be cleared by the teacher, and must be
at least one minute long when
read aloud.
The monologue
must be written
in a manner that
displays understanding of the themes
of the short
story.
You are welcome and encouraged to
perform
your monologue for the class, although it is not required.
Connect to a current event
Find a current event
that can be compared
to one of the short stories
Describe how the current event connects to your understanding of the short story
Use textual evidence from both pieces.
Write a text conversation between the main character and other characters
Write a series of text messages between at least two characters
The texts should total
at least 20 exchanges for each person
and should center around the experiences
of the characters throughout the entire story.
Language and content must be school appropriate. The content and value of the exchanges must be
approved by the teacher.
