All About Mexico

From 1910-1920, the Mexican Revolution

occurred. It was a major armed struggle
that radically transformed Mexican
politics and society.

The Mexican Revolution was caused by

theMexicanpeoples displeasure over
the dictatorship of President Porfirio Daz
, who had been in office for thirty one
years.

Once the war was over, promotion of

mural painting started as part of efforts
to reunify the country under the post
Mexican Revolution government.

History

The Mexican Muralist Movement

Murals typically had a social or

political reform theme.

The movement was very

popular during the 1920s and
lasted all the way to the 1970s.

Jos Clemente Orozco, Diego

Rivera, and David Alfaro
Siqueirosbecame the
internationally-known leaders of
the mural movement. All
believed that art, the highest
form of human expression, was
a key force in social revolution.

All About Mexico

Traditional
Dress

Traditionally Mexican women wear

clothing that is normally very simple
with garnishes of color. TheHuipil, a
tunic-like dress, and other types
ofenredosare very typical.

One of the more emblematic women's

outfits is the china poblana, Chinese
Pueblan in English. This outfit is known
for its white shirt, shawl and wide,
colorful dress.

Maria Doll

Maria was born in Mexico in 1910 and grew up

during the time period when the muralism art
movement was in full effect.

Marias mother was a mural painter during this time

and passed down her love of art to her daughter,
Maria.

After the revolution ended, Maria was ten and

wanted to help unify her country and make her
homeland great again so she painted murals around
her neighborhood.

Her murals caught the eye of government officials

and she was awarded for her efforts to reunify
Mexico.
