COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM

FOR INFORMATION

COMMITTEE: Neighborhood Services

FROM: Alvin G. cober

DATE: April 5, 2010

SUBJECT: Adding Glass to the City's Curbside Recycling Program

Starting April 12, 2010, the City will begin accepting glass bottles and jars as part of its curbside
recycling program. This change in the program is a cooperative effort between the City and
Escambia County to increase the recovery of residential recyc1ables and to provide more
convenience to City Sanitation customers. Since the start of the City's recycling program, adding
glass as an acceptable item has been a frequent request of citizens.

Over the next several days, residents will receive a postcard introducing glass to the City's
curbside recycling program and providing the new guidelines. Glass bottles and jars of any color
are acceptable but they should be rinsed and have the lids removed before placement in the
recycling cart. There is no need for customers to remove labels from the bottles and jars.
Mirrors, porcelain, cookware, ceramics and light bulbs are among the glass items that are NOT
acceptable for recycling. It is anticipated that the addition of glass will provide a noticeable
increase in the city's total recycling recovery rate.
