Salt Lake CC Math 1210 The U.S. Interior Secretary recently approved drilling of natural gas wells near Vernal, Utah. Your company has begun drilling and established a high-producing well on BLM ground, They now need to build a pipeline to get the natural gas to their refinery. While running the line directly to the refinery will be the least amount of pipe and shortest distance, it would require running the line across private ground and paying a right-of-way fee. There is a mountain directly east of the well that must be drilled through in order to run the pipeline due east. Your company can build the pipeline around the private ground by going 5 mile directly west and then 15 miles south and finally 40 miles east to the refinery (see figure below). Cost for materials, labor and fees to run the pipeline across BLM ground is $500,000" per mile, Cost of drilling through the existing mountain would be a one-time cost of $2;000;000'on top of the normal costs of the pipeline itself. Also the BLM will require an environmental impact study before allowing you to drill through the mountain. Cost for the study is estimated to be $320,000 and will delay the project by 4 months costing the company another $120,000 per month. For any pipeline run across private ground, your company incurs an additional’$350;000 per mile cost for right-of-way fees. Your company has asked you to do the following: a) Determine the cost of running the pipeline strictly on BLM ground with two different cases. i)owrOne running-west;-south and then east-to the refinery. ii). One heading-east:through.the mountain.and-then-south:te-the refinery, b) Determine the cost of running the pipeline: i) = The shortest distance from well to-refinery across the privaterground ii)>-—-The shortest path across the private ground (directly:south);:thenstraighistothe -refinery.(directly-east). ¢}-Determine the optimal place to run the pipeline to minimize:cost: ~Clearly-shew-all work including drawing the pipeline:on the figure below. Mister Johnson, As US Gas Co. prepares to lay pipes out in Vernal Utah, I have ran estimates for 5 different options available to us. There is a plot of private land out there that separates the well from the refinery and each of the five options gives us a different way and cost to lay the pipe from the well to the refinery. Our first option for laying the pipe is one that goes around the private. It would require us to lay pipe five miles going west, then turn to the south and lay pipe for 15 miles then finally we would turn east and lay pipe for 40 miles to the refinery. The cost for laying pipe on the non- private (BLM) land is $500,000 per mile. So to estimate the cost for this option I used a simple equation cost c=500000x, with x being the # of miles. In this case we would lay pipe for a total of 60 miles making the cost equal 500000 * 60 or $30,000,000. The second option available to us also goes around the private land completely. It starts with us going east 35 miles from the well then turning south and laying pipe for 15 miles tothe refinery. In addition to laying the pipe this option would require us to drill thru a mountain which is a one time cost of $2,000,000, we would also have to pay for an environmental impact study which would cost $320,000 and would delay us 4 months adding an additional $120,000 per month. This option is estimated with eqation c=500000 * x + 2800000. The total miles is 50 in this situation so the cost would equal 500000 * 50 + 2800000 which is a grand total of $27,800,000. Our third option would be to lay the pipe across the private land directly from the well to the refinery, The cost of laying pipe on the private land is $850,000 per mile. Using Pythagoreans theorem I was able to calculate the number of miles we would be crossing. It is equal to the square root of 1450 which is approximately 30.0789 miles. The estimate equation for this option is as follows: o=850000 * x. With x = 30.0789 the total cost for this option would be $32,367,035.70. The fourth option is one that goes directly south from the well 15 miles across the private land then turning east and heading 35 miles across BLM land to the refinery. With the two different costs per mile the cost for this option is modeled as: ¢ = 850000 * (private miles) + 500000 * (BLM miles). In this scenario the cost would equal: 85000 * 15 + 500000 * 35 which would bring the total cost for this option to $30,250,000. Our last option would be between options 3 and 4. We would lay pipe in a south easterly direction across private land to some point along the south edge of the property, then we would head due east and lay pipe until we reach the refinery. Using simple algebra, (please see my attached notes for further clarification) I was able to estimate the number of miles we would cross private land as (square root (x"2 +225). Iwas also able to estimate the number of miles we would travel along BLM land as (35 — x). Applying the cost per mile we would get an estimate equation of c= 850000 * sqrt(x“2 + 225) + 500000 * (35—x). This doesn’t help us a lot because there are many different ways to go, what we need is the way that is cheapest using this option. To find the cheapest option I had to use calculus. First I had to find the first derivative of the equation. It is c’ = (850000 * x — 500000 * sqrt(x"2 + 225) / sqrt(x"2 + 225). By setting this new equation equal to zero and solving for x that will help us find the cheapest method. To keep it simple x came out as approximately 10.91. Using the algebra from before, I calculated the number of miles we would lay pipe on private land as 18.549 miles and the number of miles we would lay pip on BLM land as 24.0891 miles. By plugging these numbers back into our a me estimate equation we get c= 850000 * 18.549 + 500000 * 24.0891 which gives us a minimal cost of $27,810,795.32 for option 5. Looking at all of the results options 2 is the cheapest and option 5 is only $10,795.32 more. These are the two cheapest options. The draw back to option 2 is that our schedule would be pushed back 4 months. To keep our schedule current option five is the best and as mentioned before it is only a few thousand dollars more than option two. Thope this will help you to make a decision for this project! ie Sam Strong, Math is really usefiul. With both the pre-cale class I took in spring of 2015 and the calculus class 1am in now in Fall 2015 T have learned a lot of useful tools. I have taken calculus classes in the past and had learned the same things, but was never really taught the applications for them, Calculus is beneficial in so many ways. Whether it is to find the minimal cost of something, like the pipe laying example above, or to maximize an area like a garden that is fenced off, calculus has an answer. I know a couple of people who are interested in becoming pilots and I was able to encourage them to learn at least pre-calc skills. I shared with them how I learned how to use the laws of sines and cosines to figure out what heading an airplane must take in order to get where it needs to go if when there are winds blowing. There are so many things that calculus can be used for and I look forward to learning more.
