Math Lesson
Common Core:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.B.3:
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. 2 Examples: If 8 + 3
= 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.)
To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 +
4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.5:
Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.7:
Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving
addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following
equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 - 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 +
2.
Unit Outcome:
TLW: demonstrate their knowledge of fact strategies by solving number sentences.
TLW: identify, discuss, learn, the Doubles Fact Plus One strategy through small
group discussion and independent demonstration using a variety of manipulative,
including themselves.
TLW: apply the Doubles Fact Plus One strategy to solve problems.
Rational/Purpose of the Lesson:
The students will be able to use their prior knowledge of doubles facts to help solve
problems of doubles plus one. Eg) students know that 3+3=6 so they can find
3+4=7, because they did 3+3+1
Assessment:
Use the students worksheet and class discussion, to assess the students ability to
know mathematical problems. Specially able to find doubles plus one.
Resources/Materials Required:

White bored/markers/eraser
Book: Double the Ducks
Computer- YouTube and Compass Odyssey

Clipboards
Pencils
Math Papers

Introduction/Grabber:
Who on the carpet knows their doubles? Im going to try and trick you guys, do you
think I can? What is 3+3? What is 2+2? What is 5+5? What is 5+6? Today I am
going to teach you how to add with doubles plus one. You are all so smart and know
you know your doubles fact so well so I know you will pick this up!
Procedures:

Read Double the Ducks. By: Stuart J. Murphy Illustrated by: Valeria Patrone
YouTube song: Doubles Double 1-5 & 6-10
Have the kids repeat the doubles, and write them on the board.
Show how they can use double facts to help them with doubles plus one. Eg:
3+4=____
Sit on the carpet in a circle and work on worksheet.
Use manipulates to show, and have students use them as well.
Once completed, switch groups. First group goes to computers and works on
compass odyssey. The second group will come to the carpet for their minilesson.

Homework:
Daily math homework will be handed out at the end of the day; it will be a doubles
plus one fact sheet.
Closure:
Discuss how the students can use their knowledge of doubles facts to help them
solve problems of doubles facts plus one.
