Assignment #1
1. Demographics and Population Health Assignment
The census of San Bernardino is based on the 2014 population estimate. White alone percentage is 77.3%. Black or African American
alone is 9.5%. American Indian and Alaska Native is 2.0%. Asian alone is 7.3%. Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone is
0.5%. Two or More races are 3.3%. Hispanic or Latino makes up 51.7%. However, White alone, not Hispanic or Latino is 30.6%.
Discussion: Im a little confused on the census of White alone and White alone, not Hispanic or Latino. Are they comparing
between a white population thats predominately white and a white population that coexist with a Latino or Hispanic community?
Because it seems like the Hispanic or Latino population is much larger than White, alone not Hispanic or Latino by about a 20%
difference while the population of White alone is 73.2% which much larger than both the White, alone not Hispanic or Latino and
the Hispanic or Latino population. However, from my experiences from living in San Bernardino, I am positive that the majority of
the population is Hispanic or Latino while the White population is the minority population compared to them. It is shown that the
Hispanic culture which is predominately the Mexican culture is widely influenced in the San Bernardino County especially in the city
of San Bernardino.
Race vs. Ethnicity vs. Culture
The difference between Race and Ethnicity is that Race classes an individual by their physical characteristics such as small or slanted
eyes, you will classify their race as Asian or to be more specific, Far East Asian since Far East Asians predominately has those features
while Asians from the areas like India do not have those features. Ethnicity is different from Race since Race can determine or class
the individual for being Asian, their ethnicity can determine two individuals apart. For example, we have two Far East Asians but one
is from Japan and the other is from the Philippines. One speaks Japanese and the other speaks Tagalog( a dialect in the Philippines).
By race, they are both Asian, but by Ethnicity they are different. One is Japanese and the other is Filipino. By their Geographic
locations, those two individuals differ by language, values and symbols, cultural norms, religion music, dietary patterns, gender roles
and employment patterns. For example, people in Japan generally eat with chopsticks while people in the Philippines generally eat
with forks and spoons. Culture is different from Race and Ethnicity because culture can be different in general locations. For example,
a Japanese person born and raised in Japan generally nods their head to an individual when they greet or see them while a Japanese
person born and raised in the United States generally gives an individual a hug or a handshake. In Japanese culture, individuals dont
normally shake hands or hug since physical contact is not as common as in America due to culture. However, culturally values such as
Japanese eating food with chopsticks or not walking around inside the house with shoes can be assimilated with American culture or
vice-versa.
Age and Gender demographics
Language spoken other than English at the age of 5+ is 41.1% while the graduation is % of people in San Bernardino County is lower
than the rest of California. For instance, High School grad 25+ is 78.1% while the rest of California is 81.2% while the individuals
who are 25+ who have a Bachelors Degree is 18.7% while the rest of California is 30.7%. However, data shows that the media to
travel to work time is higher in San Bernardino county is 29.9% while the rest of California is 27.2% regarding 16+ years which
means that people may work more than they actually go to school. Maybe its that people from San Bernardino county rather go to
work than school which may regards to San Bernardinos social economics which can be seen as being much lower to the rest of
California.
Households and Health Outcomes
Households in proverty can lead to health that can be dangerous to the individual. San Bernardino plenty of liquor stores in areas that
can be dangerous to the community that live in poverty which can lead to low health outcomes.
