February 2015

We are now in February now and I hope everyone remembers

its time for the election of next years officers. The first meetings are
nominations and the second is the Elections. I encourage everyone to
attend these important meetings.
I just got back from attending the winter state meeting. That
meeting impressed upon me how important membership is to the
success of our Lodge and I agree, so I would like to challenge every
member to give a true friend an application whether or not you
might not be able to attend like you used to maybe a worthy friend
might. So please see what you can do to help the order, as we come
down the home stretch for this term.
Id like to thank everyone for supporting me and all the hard
work that the officers and committees have done to make this lodge a
success and most importantly, I would like to thank all of the members of our Great Lodge.
One more thing: some time this month tickets will be on sale
for the ER Banquet. I hope to see everyone there to help celebrate a
good year.

Ladies of the Elks 1866

The LOE visited the Franklin Woods on
December 8th and delivered Christmas Stockings
stuffed with gifts to all their patients. Their smiles
brought a warm smile to everyones face.
We then proceeded to the Olive Garden for
our yearly holiday dinner. We all enjoyed
exchanging gifts and celebrating the holiday. Our
special guest was Tammy who has helped us all
year with our events and cooked for us all year at
our meetings.
I would also like to thank our ER Mike
Greaver for all his support working with us this
past year. He is a true asset to Elks 1866.
May 2015 bring us all together with the
common goal of helping our community and
veterans.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
Our Lodge Scholarship Committee and Board of Officers have made a decision to split our resources for the Elks
Scholarship Program. It has been decided that the ENF Annual Scholarship Program will continue each year as scheduled
by Grand Lodge Office of ENF. A Scholarship Award will be given to the top male and top female winner of the competition.
Those winners will be forwarded to the District Competition level for continuation towards the Grand Lodge ENF Program
Awards.
We also would like to start our own Scholarship Program for all Students in their Senior year in a local High School that
are Children and Grandchildren of our Lodge Members. With that being decided; a Program is being developed, to nearly
mirror the ENF Annual Scholarship Program, so that we may get this local Program started this 2015 winter season. The
Program will not be held during the same time frame (local deadline for ENF Scholarship was December 5, 2014) as set by ENF,
but will follow a separate deadline each year in February.
The startup requirements will begin with the following:
Must be a Senior student in a local High School (inside Lodge jurisdiction).
Must be a Lodge Members Child or Grandchild (Stepchildren / Grandchildren & legally Adopted Children /
Grandchildren included). Sponsoring Member Name & Membership Number must be included on Application to
be eligible.
Follow all Requirements as set by Scholarship Committee (visit our Lodge website: www.EssexElks.org Scholarship
Page for instructions). Download and print all instructions (Must be included in Packet), and any other pertinent
Application information. All instructions will be posted and available on January 6. Must meet local Lodge Deadline
by 9:00 pm February 19th (at Lodge by 9 pm).
Thanks for your patience as we begin this new endeavor for our Children/Grandchildren that are completing their high school
studies and moving on to an advanced school of learning to prepare for their selected careers in our society.

ONLY SKATE ON
ICE at an ICE RINK

ESSEX ELKS NEWS

PAGE 7

With the recent tragic events in Lansdowne, please make an extra effort
to know where your kids are at all times.

Fire and Rescue Experts Warn:

Stay Off the Ice!

Don't be tempted to skate, fish or walk on frozen ponds or coves. Ice in the
Baltimore region is too unstable and unsafe, fire and rescue experts say.
"The only safe place to skate is at an ice rink," says Fire Chief John J. Hohman.
"Even relatively thick ice on natural bodies of water is often unstable. You risk
disaster when you venture out on it."
Ice on Maryland waterways rarely freezes evenly and solidly for a variety of reasons, including temperature fluctuations beneath the surface and the presence of contaminants in the water,
which can prevent freezing.
Without special equipment, human beings who fall into water with sub-freezing
temperatures will survive only about 15 minutes, county water rescue experts say.
Wear a life jacket, if you must be on a boat on the water.
Do not venture onto the ice to rescue a pet.
If you are with someone who falls through the ice, do not go on the ice to help him!
Instead:

*Call 911 as soon as possible.

*Mark the spot with a hat or a piece of clothing, so that if the victim becomes
submerged rescuers have a point of reference. Time is of the essence with this sort of
rescue.
*Then, reach, throw and row. If the victim is near enough to shore to reach a ladder, tree branch or pole, extend one of these toward him as quickly as possible and pull
him to safety. Throw him a rope or a flotation device, if possible. Row toward him, if the
water is clear and you have access to a boat. Again, do not leave the shore and venture
into the water or onto the ice unless you have special water rescue training.
*If the victim can crawl out of the water and onto the ice, have him roll away from
the crack and crawl on his belly to shore. Staying low distributes the body's weight on
the ice and helps reduce the risk of the ice cracking.

ONLY SKATE ON
ICE at an ICE RINK

Even if youre not going onto the ICE, please

make sure your Family and those
Grandchildren (you know who they are)
know about the dangers of ICE.
