Site observation form for Practicum

Everyone will need to complete at least one 3 hour observation. If you are fulfilling your Practicum experience
at your current work place you will need to complete two four hour observations at another early childhood
setting
Program Information
Your papers need to include, the name of the site you visited, where it is located, the type of program it is, and
its overall philosophy. Also included should be the number of staff and average training level, as well as
number of children in the room.
Following is a list of things to consider as you do your observations.

Do the childrens behaviors change from one area in the room to another? If so how?
Does the teacher need to remind the children of the proper way to behave in any area?
What in the environment holds the childrens interest? How do they express that interest?
Do the children use the equipment and materials in an appropriate manner?
How would you assess the overall arrangement of the classroom or playground? Is there enough space

for the children to move around freely? To engage in the activities for which the space is intended?
Are there quiet comfort places for children?
Is there a place for parents?
Is there a nice balance between quiet and active activities?
Are there a wide variety of experiences available to accommodate wide ranges in interests and

development?
10. Do adults respectfully facilitate, guide, encourage, and nurture each childs self-esteem, competence,
and self-reliance?
11. Is there adequate storage areas? Are they clearly labeled and accessible to teachers?
12. Are shelves clearly marked and labeled with pictures for children to put away their toys /supplies?
