Dear Dr. Bruce,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the content chosen for my portfolio and my mastery
of the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). I included the progress report assignment for the
iFixit project and two PowerPoint slides used on the Obsolescence and e-Waste presentation.
The documents are arranged in order from greatest to the least amount of SLOs covered within
them. Both documents illustrate my proficiency in writing and my mastering of the courses
SLOs.
The progress report assignment is a formal document that evaluated my teams progress on our
iFixit replacement guides. The first SLO shows my mastery of rhetorical focus. To assure that
the content was successfully conveyed to my audience, Dr. Bruce and the Technical Writing
staff, I included full sentences and omitted the use of emojis. Also, I arranged the content
chronologically to allow effortless understanding.
Mastery of the third SLO, persuasive arguments, was also illustrated by the progress report. The
main objective for the document was to persuade the reader of our successful iFixit project
completion. I added more details to the reaming work section to support my claim forecasting the
completion of the deadlines. The addition of detailed evidence to the summary section and the
use of concise language throughout the document also shows my mastery of persuasive
arguments.
In addition, I have demonstrated mastery of the fourth SLO which is organization and focus. A
time pattern was used to effectively organize the documents content. The sections where
arranged in chronological order. Every section includes a heading to accurately and specifically
describe the content of each paragraph. I included an easy to read table to allow for quick and
effective understanding of the tasks completion status and anticipated deadline.
Mastery of the fifth SLO, academic language and design, is demonstrated in my greeting. I
refrained from using language that is gender specific. When I addressed the iFixit personal I

included the title: iFixit Tech Writing Staff. This avoided the use of title prefixes such as Mr. and
Mrs. The progress reports design was used to emphasize important information.
Lastly, my portfolio demonstrates mastery of the sixth SLO, collaboration. I worked in class and
meet out of class with my teammates to contribute my ideas, draft, revise, and proofread my
work. I incorporated their critiques into my revision. I made sure my paragraph indentation was
consistent and eliminated information on the chart that pertained only to the course. My feedback
allowed my peers to make adjustments. Team collaboration was carried out in an array of
settings including in-class, in person at the library, and on Google Drive.
In my portfolio I also provided two PowerPoint slides that were used on the Obsolescence and eWaste presentation. This assignment satisfies the second SLO, ethical research. For this
assignment I conducted extensive research to provide accurate and reliable information. To
avoid plagiarism, I cited sources using the American Psychological Association (APA) format
that is used in the Health Science field. The first slide shows evidence that proper in-text citation
was used. In addition, a Reference slide was included to give readers access to the source used.
I believe that the mastering of these SLOs have prepared me as a writer for future progress
reports and presentations in both my academic and career assignments. One area I need to
improve on, is to use concise language to strengthen the persuasiveness of my writing and allow
readers to quickly obtain crucial information. Mastering the courses SLOs has increased my
confidence as a technical writer, to further improve my skills I plan to seek academic advice.

Sincerely,
Ofelia Cruz (MW)
