Unit 3.5
Special Effects

Math This week finished up our unit on fractions. We will review the

unit on Monday and then take the test over Topic 9 on Tuesday. I
hate to start a new topic before we go on break, but we must. We will
begin our next topic which covers adding and subtracting fractions
and mixed numbers. We will review what is covered after break before
we move onto to any more lessons.

Reading

Next week we will not be having a regular weekly reading

story which also means we will not be having a reading test. We will
instead practice reading skills by reading Christmas/Winter Holidays
themed stories and poems.

Grammar Next week we will continue working on adverbs.

Writing This week students worked on researching their inquiry

question and deciding what presentation method they will use to

show their understanding. We will finish this up next week and hopefully still have time to present them before break!

Spelling Next weeks words all contain prefixes of either de-, dis-, or
un-. This will help out a little with studying, but there are still some
tricky words to memorize. Start practicing early!!!

Social Studies This week we reviewed our chapter on the early

New England colonies and took the chapter 5 test. We will begin our
next chapter next week. Chapter 6 will be on the Middle Atlantic Colonies. Its another short chapter. We will finish the chapter before
break, but I dont want to test right before we go on break. Its never pretty! We will review the chapter and test when we return in January.

Science This week we reviewed our final lesson in the unit on mix-

tures and solutions. We began reviewing our unit on matter. Our

unit test will be next Thursday. Its not ideal timing, but weve been
working for so long on this unit. I dont want to drag it on into the
new year.

Note From the Teacher:

We have one week to go until a much needed break! Dont forget that our class Winter
Party is next Friday. We will be having a breakfast themed party. In the spirit of Christmas (morning) and our breakfast party, students will be allowed to wear their pajamas on
the 18th. The fifth grade teachers thought it would be fun to have a Christmas morning
feel on our last day. Students can bring in their sweet presents anytime next week. Remember they need a king-sized candy bar or equivalent sweet treat wrapped and labeled
with their name.
Have a great weekend!

This week we learned that Ana likes to color, dig rocks, and play with her dogs. Her
favorite subject is Social Studies and she
wants to be an archaeologist when she
grows up!
