Platform: Buidling Capacity and Engagement through the Royal BC

Museums Learning Portal (AFTERNOON)
K-12 teachers, students, and parents

Chris OConnor runs the school programs at the Royal BC

Museum, driven by a desire to shake up the traditional field trip
and school/community partnership. Inquiry, student-led learning
and digital engagement inform our school program design process
at the museum and, as a result, better help us meet the needs of all
learners.
This workshop will be a hands-on exploration of the Learning
Portal, a digital engagement platform from the Royal BC Museum.
The Learning Portal consists of main Pathways of thematic
learning, and these Pathways are expanding all of the time. During
the workshop, we will explore the early stages of development of a
Pathway on Indigenous knowledge and the potential links with
new curriculum. The participants of the workshop will be able to
ask for what they want in the Pathway, which will be built in
months following Tapestry 2016. In this way, teachers can ask for
the kind of support they feel they need, while also seeing tangible
examples of how the Learning Portal can be used right now.
The Royal BC Museum will hold a Professional Development day in
September of 2016 as a follow-up to this Tapestry workshop and
as a launching for the new pathway on Indigenous Knowledge.
