GUIDANCE OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

If you have questions about any of the following information, please

contact Guidance Director Joanna Lederer-Barnes at 375-2589 x 106
or lederer-barnesj@bvsu.org.
For Grades 6 and 8
Between now and early February, all 6th and 8th graders will be participating in
career exploration workshops through the guidance office. Each student will be
completing an online career interest inventory and participating in a discussion of
how to get information about careers that relate to their interests. The results of
the inventory will be saved for them to reflect on when they write their Personalized
Learning Plans next year.
For Grades 9-12
The Governors Institutes of Vermont invite high school students to spend a
weekend exploring STEM topics through their Winter Weekend programs. This year,
topics include Astrophotography, Biomedical Research, Cybersecurity and Hacking,
and Advanced Math for Girls. The Winter Weekends take place February 5-7 and
February 19-21 at Goddard College. Tuition is on a sliding scale based on family
income. The application deadline is January 13. For more details, visit www.giv.org.
For Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors
The application period for MedQuest 2016 is now open! MedQuest is a six-day
summer program that is sponsored by the Southern Vermont Area Health Education
Centers. It gives students the opportunity to engage in hands-on exploration of
medical careers, and includes a hospital job shadow. The tuition for the program is
$500, but some scholarships are available. The application deadline is March 4. For
more information, go to www.svahec.org.
For Juniors
Juniors are finishing up their individual guidance appointments for post-high school
planning. If your student has not shared his/her folder with you, and you would like
a copy, please contact the guidance office. Letters will be mailed home in the next
few weeks about these appointments.
For Seniors
Reminder: FAFSA Night is January 5! If you have not signed up for a small-group
time slot for this important event, please contact the guidance office. A
representative from VSAC will be here to help families fill out their college financial
aid forms.
Local scholarship lists and financial information were recently mailed home. If
you do not receive yours, please contact the guidance office.
