POE Block 2
1.1.6 Compound Machine
Design

Design Problem
We must use a compound machine to lift a .5 Lb weight 6in. vertically
in under 3 minutes. Through this exercise we are supposed to learn
how the elements of design affect mechanical advantage, how simple
machines work together, and to learn the capabilities of the VEX kits.

Design Constraints

Must
Must
Must
Must
Must

have a minimum of 2 simple machines

have a minimum of 1 complex machines
lift a .5Lb weight 6 inches in under 3 minutes
only have one point of human interaction
be made using the VEX kits

Brainstorm Process

This is my drawing of my original idea. It has a gear and sprocket

system turned by a wheel and axle which then winds cord around another
wheel and axle system. The cord pulls through a pulley which then pulls
down a lever (first class). The other side of the lever has the weight attached
to it.

Selection Process
We used a design matrix to come up with our final solution. The criteria
was: it had to be simple, time efficient, easily testable, resilient, and clean.
My idea was chosen.

Design Modifications

The first change made was the addition of an idler sprocket. This was added
so that the chain would have less lack and greater tension. Second we
switched from the cardboard backing to using the VEX plates because the
cardboards spacing didnt work for our design. Thirdly we made the lever
longer so that our mechanical advantage would be greater and we would be
able to life the weight 6 inches. Fourthly we attached the pulley upside down
so that it would move less under weight. Finally we wound the string around
the wheel so that it wouldnt fall off the edge and wrap around the axle

Final Design

Our machine worked well and worked quickly. Mr. De Palma actually
commented on the speed and ease of the machine.
