Story Plan

FOCUS STATEMENT
My story will focus on how Instagram has changed the world of art, and specifically its impact
on artists property of their work. The questions I will answer are how Instagram takes away
rights of artists and how that impacts artists, but also how Instagram is beneficial to artists who
want to gain a large following.
Slug: Instagram

NEWSWORTHINESS:
T- This story is timely because Instagram has increasingly become a medium for artists to
display their work.17% of adults used Instagram in 2013, 26% of adults used Instagram in 2014
and it is likely this percentage has continued to increase in 2015 (source: www.pewinternet.org).
I-This story has impact because in 2014, approximately 53% of adults ages 18-29 had an
Instagram account (source: http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/01/09/demographics-of-key-socialnetworking-platforms). That number has likely gone up since 2014. This percentage shows that
the majority of young adults have an Instagram account.
P- This story has proximity because I will be interviewing an art student from the Art Institute of
Kansas City and an art professor from KCAI as well. KCAI has proximity to Lawrence.
I-This story has human interest because I do not think a lot of people read the terms of use before
they sign up for an Instagram account, and are therefore somewhat unaware of the rights they are
handing over to Instagram. By writing a story on this flaw of Instagram, but also including the
benefits to artists that come with having an account, I think there will be an audience who is
interested in becoming more aware of its rights.
C- This story presents some conflict because it will reveal some information about Instagram that
some people may not have known when they created an account. This could possibly affect
whether or not an artist continues to put his or her work up on Instagram.
U- There is not an unusual component to this story
P- This story has prominence because I will be interviewing artists and a professor from KCAI.
The story also has prominence because Instagram is widely known and used.

QUESTIONS
1) What are users rights to photographs as stated in Instagrams terms of use?
2) How do the terms of use affect artists?
3) What are the benefits of having an Instagram account for artists?

VIDEO PLAN
For the video story, I will be filming Gretchen Kellys process of setting up, photographing and
posting her photography on Instagram. Kelly is a photographer and uses Instagram to promote
her blog. My videos audio will narrate how she sets up a shot, why she uses Instagram as a
medium for her photography and how she feels about Instagrams terms of use.

AUDIO PLAN
My podcast will be a condensed version of my news story. I will highlighting the key points of
Instagrams terms of use, a brief summary of the challenges artists face when deciding whether
or not to use Instagram to showcase their work and a few quotes from each of my sources.
