QUETZALTREKKERS

GUATEMALA
Rainy Butlers PRT 4828 internship
Fall 2015

It all started with a group of

people who saw a need for
change
Several social workers
saw a need for a school in
the poorest part of
Quetaltenango and they
worked to make
Quetzaltrekkers come to
pass!
With the first idea of
starting a restaurant to
raise money, they later
turned to trekking which
had great success.
Quetzaltrekkers fully

Escuela de la Calle
Opened in1997

School of the Street can accommodate children from kinder

garden to 6th grade. Families apply and the children are
chosen based on need. The school has the capacity of 200
students.

Hogar Abierto
Opened in 1999

Open Home is the home for children to youth aged 8 to 17.

Coming from families who are unhealthy (alcohol and drug
problems), live far from formal education or have no family at
all, the Home provides a safe place for them to grow and
flourish.

We are one of
Quetzaltenangos
biggest trekking
organizations!

100%
volunte
er run!

Thats right, there are no

supervisors, no boss, nothing!
Quetzaltrekkers has been running for
20 years on volunteers alone.
Volunteering for a three month
minimum means each volunteer has
time to learn, then to put to practice
then to teach new guides coming in.
Volunteers receive no pay, all profits
go to Escuela de la Calle and Hogar
Abierto.
This creates a very unique
environment to live, learn and to
work.

My role
Other than working with general office work, knowing how to
lead safe and informative treks, I had an extra position called
Safety Coordinator. I prepared and taught a class to the
other guides on potential and probable safety concerns and I
kept our first aid supplies organized and well stocked.

Treks

Santa Maria 1-2-day, Santiaguito Mirador -day

Tajumulco 2-day

Nebaj to Todos Santos 6-day

Lago Atitlan 3-day

My goals
1- By December 1st I want to know all
about being a guide for
Quetzaltrekkers and to know if guiding
is a path I on which I wish to continue.
2- By the middle of October I will be
knowledgeable with the areas of each
of the treks Quetzaltrekkers offers as
well as the reason we offer these
treks.
3- I will be an open and informative
safety coordinator for
Quetzaltrekksers.
I believe that I accomplished all of my
goals and now know that I do like
being a guide, however I would want
