Re:

Feasibility Proposal

Purpose
This proposal questions permission to research the feasibility of the practicality and interest of
extending the range that Hamline Universities Safety and Security drives for their escort
service. I would then write a report that is supported by data collected from the study with my
recommendation on whether Hamlines Safety and Security should extend the range for their
escort service. I will be sending you this report no later than November 29, 2015.

Summary
Hamline Universities Safety and Security will only travel up to a mile from campus to escort
its students. This range is much too small and must be increased to reduce safety issues among
Hamline students as well as give them access to basic necessities such as a grocery store and
entertainment. There are several reasons why Hamline students would benefit from extending
the escort range. It would:

provide a safer way to travel through the Hamline Midway

allow easy access to the Hamline-Midway area.

reduce the amount of drunk driving

I plan to research each of these benefits and how they affect Hamline students. Given the
success of my research, I feel I will not have difficulties obtaining the information needed to
make an informed and documented study of this subject.

Introduction
Currently, Hamline University provides its students with an escort service through Hamline
Safety and Security to anywhere within a one mile radius of campus. The one mile radius does
not include a grocery store and is limited to very little entertainment. Not providing a ride to
students who need or want to visit these destinations leads to walking and other unsafe means
of transportation.
In the past two months there has been a large amount of crime in the Hamline-Midway area.
According to SpotCrime (2015) there have been over 50 thefts, more than 15 assaults, and 32
robberies from August 17, 2015 to October 14, 2015. If Safety and Security provides its
students with a ride to anywhere in the Hamline-Midway area, students can feel safer when
traveling.
Another big issue among college students is drinking and driving. A 2001 study by Hingson,
Heeren,Winter, and Wechsler (2005) showed that over 2.8 million college students, ages 18
24, reported driving under the influence. That same year there were over 600,000 injuries and
more than 1700 deaths cause by drunken driving accidents with college students age 18-24.
Because a majority of the bars in the Hamline-Midway area are more than one mile away from
campus, students have to find their own means of transportation to and from when visiting
these bars. Hamline Safety and Security can help prevent drunk driving among its students by
providing a sober ride to students attending bars in the Hamline-Midway area.
In the following sections, I will describe completed research, outline proposal research,
describe criteria to evaluate my research, and outline a schedule for completing the feasibility
project.

Proposed Procedure
In this section I will outline the research I have completed as well as proposed research, I will
describe my criteria for evaluating the results of my study, and I .

Completed Research
Currently, I have researched the following information:

I have gathered information on committed crimes in the Hamline-Midway area

during the past two months.

I have gathered information on a drunk driving study among college students

age 18-24.
2

I have distributed questionnaires to students at Hamline to find out if they are

aware of the escort service provided by Safety and Security.

Proposed Research
The following describes the course of action I have developed to complete my research
goals:

I will analyze data from the questionnaires I distributed.

I will continue to research crime rates on campus and in the Hamline-Midway

area.

I will continue to research drunk driving statistics among college students.

Criteria
After completing my research, I will make a recommendation based on the following
criteria:

Is there any interest among Hamline students to increase the range of Safety
and Security escorts?

Would Hamline Safety and Security meet the demand of escorts for students if
the range were increased?

Would Hamline students benefit from increasing the escort range?

Qualifications
Throughout my college career, three years, I have acquired the skills and experience I need to
conduct this report. I am pursuing a degree in digital media arts and I am currently on track to
graduate in spring 2016. I have taken one or more writing intensive classes each of the past
three years. These classes have taught me basic writing skills as well as how to meet deadlines
and follow rubrics.
