HowtouseaSurveyingLevel

Step1:Firstyouwillhavetoassemblethesurveyinglevel.Todothisyouwillhavetosetupthe
tripodinalocationthatyoucaneasilyseeyourotherlocationsthatyouwillbe
measuring.Tosetupthetripodyoumustextendthelegstoalengththatissuitableforyour
height.Thensteponthebearingplatesoneachlegtosecuretheendsintothesoil.

Step2:Onceyouhavethetripodsetupyouwillattachthethesurveyinglevelbyscrewingthe
securingscrewonthetripodtothebottomofthebaseplateonthesurveyinglevel.

Step3:Withthesurveyinglevelconnectedtothetripodyouwillneedtomakeithorizontally
level.Todothisyouwillusethelevelingscrewstocentertheairbubbleonthecircularlevel.
Theeasiestwaytodothisisusetwoofthelevelingscrewsatoncetogetascloseasyoucan
andthengettherestofthewaywiththefinallevelingscrew.Thebubbleshouldbeinthe
positionshown.

Step4:Next,afteryourlevelissetupcorrectly,youwillwanttoestablishareferencepointalso
knownasabenchmarkelevationwhichyoucanbaseyourcalculationsoffof.These
benchmarksareusuallyestablishedbyagovernmententity.Thepointsaregivenasacertain
elevationabovemeansealevel.

Step5:NowyoumustfindtheelevationofthesurveyinglevelorconsideredHI(Heightof
Instrument).Haveonepersonsetthemeasuringstickontothebenchmark,ofwhichthe
elevationisknown.Recordyourmeasurementandthisisconsideredtheheightofyour

instrument.

Step6:Next,haveyourpartnermovetothesecondlocationthatyouaretryingtofindthe
elevationof.Recordyourmeasurement.

Step7:TheelevationofthepointisequaltothebenchmarkelevationestablishedinStep4+the
measurementofthemeasuringstickStep6theheightofthesurveyinglevelStep5.

Step8:Youhavenowsuccessfullydeterminedtheelevationdifferencebetweentwopoints!The
nextstepinalevelcircuitwouldbetomovethelevel,whileleavingthemeasuringstickinplace,
toanewlocation.Thenrepeatsteps5,6,and7.Note:Youdonothavetomeasurethe
benchmarkforeverymeasurement.Sinceyouhavetheelevationofanotherpoint,youcan
considerityournewbenchmark.
