Reading Response Journal
Drive
Part One
1. A brief summary of the In part one of the novel "Drive", the author went into depth about two different kinds of
chapters
people, extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic people are people who have "Type X" behavior that
are more concerned about the external rewards rather than the effort and challenge. Intrinsic
people are people who have "Type I" behavior which causes them to focus more on the
challenge than the actual reward that comes after. The author writes about how these two
different kinds of people differentiate from eachother. One leads to success and the other
doesn't. Type I behavior leads to success because when a person has motivation and puts effort
into what they are doing, they are more likely to succeed.

2. Your response to the

reading,

While I was reading, I found myself to be really interested about what the author was saying. I
was baffled on how the topic about the Type X and Type I behavior came to be. It relates to
the first article we read, "Brainology". Both of them talk about how we as humans are so used
to wanting things but we are not used to working for it. And if we do work for it, we always
expect something in return.

3. 2 discussion questions.

Why do you think most people are born with Type X behavior?
What was the authors purpose from writing this book?

4. A brief explanation of
your reading process.

During my reading process, I was not as distracted as I expected to be. Since this novel really
interested me, I was intrigued throughout the whole reading. I looked up any words that I did
not understand to gain better knowledge of each argument.

5. 3-5 good words

1. Extrinsic: not part of the essential nature of someone or something; coming or operating
from outside
I chose this word due to the fact that it was one of the words that had a
significant role on explaining what the author meant about Type X behavior. I also did
not know what this word meant so I wanted to expand my vocabulary.
2. Intrinsic: belonging naturally; essential
This word described what the author meant by having Type I behavior. I also
did not know what this word meant so I wanted to broaden my vocabulary.
