Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE
This act may be cited as the Obesity Act of 2015.
SECTION 2. FINDINGS
1) Two out of three adults and one out of three children in the United States are overweight or obese.
2) Rising consumption of sugary drinks has been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic.
3) Studies in children and adults have found that reducing sugary drink consumption can lead to better weight
control among those who are initially overweight.
4) Over the past century, Americans have increased their fructose consumption from fifteen grams per day to
seventy-five grams per day or more.
5) Food was just as abundant before obesitys ascendance; the problem is the increase in sugar consumption.
6) Consumption of fast food, trans fatty acids (TFAs), and fructosecombined with increasing portion sizes
and decreased physical activityhas been implicated as a potential contributing factor in the obesity crisis.
7) Choosing healthy foods is difficult for parents who live in areas with an overabundance of food retailers that
tend to sell less healthy food, such as convenience stores and fast food restaurants.
8) Nearly half of U.S. middle and high schools allow advertising of less healthy foods, which impacts students'
ability to make healthy food choices.
9) More of the calories from added sugars came from foods rather than beverages.
10) Increased consumption of added sugars, which are sweeteners added to processed and prepared foods, has
been linked to a decrease in intake of essential micronutrients and an increase in body weight.
SECTION 3. STATUTORY LANGUAGE
A) This act authorizes the federal government to authorize and limit the sugar content in foods and drinks.
B) This act authorizes the United States Food and Drug Administration to regulate sugar content using part the five
billion dollar budget they are given annually plus a one hundred thousand dollar bonus to initiate the process.
