Kellogg Elementary Science Night

On October 15th we the
Chapter participated in Kellogg Elementarys Annual
Science Night. Our professionals helped demonstrate
to 3rd-6th grade students
the principles of electromagnetism.
The students built an electric motor with a small
magnet, coil assembly of
copper wire, a D-cell battery, some paper clips, and
some tape. The students
attached the paper clips on

the positive and negative

end of the battery with tape,
put the magnet in the middle of the batterys body,
and sanded the ends of the
copper wire coil assembly
to remove the insulation.
The coil assembly is then
put through the ends of the
paperclip (that is attached to
the battery), which completes the circuit. Current
flows through the copper
wire coil causing it to become an electromagnet and
it attracts and repels the

magnet attached to the battery causing the coil to spin,

hence it becomes an electric
motor. The students took
home their motors as well
as new knowledge about
electromagnetism.

students to become comfortable
with one another and build connections. The SHPE Santa Barbara chapter is always prepared

Professional Development: Salary Negotiations

Our Chapter had the pleasure of hosting one of our members, Thien Nguyen, at our November Meeting speak on Salary Negotiations. As a young professional he shared what he has learned with his 5+ years of experience and gave our members the
opportunity to ask lots of questions. He provided lots of valuable tips on a topic that not many are comfortable with.
