EVENT: Labs For Liberty Tee Shirt Sales

DATE: Spring Semester

Spring Philanthropy 2015

Starting at the beginning of the spring semester, we sold Labs for Liberty t-shirts to members
of our house and Greek Row for 15 dollars. This raised us 400 dollars to be used for the
fundraising events that we were going to have throughout the semester.
Philanthropy Week- March 9th-12th:
EVENT: Taco Tuesday
DATE: Tuesday, March 10th
ATTENDANCE: 100+
The first event of our philanthropy week was Taco Tuesday. We worked with a local Mexican
restaurant to get the supplies needed for the event. The day of the event, a few brothers went to
the restaurant to prepare and cook all the food from scratch (Homemade chips, shredded
chicken, three types of salsa, toppings, and guacamole). After a long day in the kitchen we set
up the food buffet style at the house and started the event at 6 pm. We had a strong showing
and nothing but great reviews on our authentic Mexican food, collecting over 300 dollars.
EVENT: Pikes with Puppies
DATE: Wednesday, March 11th
ATTENDANCE: 200+
For this event we worked with Labs for Liberty, an up and coming non-profit that one of our
Brothers and his family started, to donate their puppys time. The event basically involves having
a bunch of puppies at the Chapter house for members of the Greek community to come
socialize with each other and of course play with the many puppies. We had at one point
upwards of 20 puppies. Some brought by Labs for Liberty, others by the brothers of Alpha Tau.
In order to increase attendance, the sorority with the best showing would get to keep one of the
puppies for the night at their chapter house. This event was a huge success, not just for raising
money for our philanthropy (Camp Hobe) and awareness of Labs for Liberty but strengthening
the relations between various houses on the Row.
EVENT: Penny Drive and Apparel Sales
DATE: Monday, March 9th-12th
ATTENDANCE: 50 +
Throughout the week, starting on Monday, we held a penny drive and sold philanthropy shirts/
shorts. The penny drive consisted of each house competing against each other to have the
most points in their jars by the end of the week. The houses with the most points would receive
a prize at the end of the week at our award ceremony, which was held on Thursday. The penny
drive raised a few hundred dollars thanks to the sorority rivalries and we had around 500 dollars
in apparel sales.

Love Pike 5K/Dog Walk

EVENT: 5K and Dog Walk
DATE: Sunday, April 12th
ATTENDANCE: 150+

Spring Philanthropy 2015

The 5k/Dog walk was our biggest event of the year. The purpose of this event was originally just
to raise money for our philanthropy (Camp Hobe) and increase awareness for Labs for Liberty
but it turned into a lot more for us. Due to rise in negative media surrounding the Greek system
and more specifically PIKE, we saw this as another opportunity to hopefully change or positively
influence the negative stigma some people have of PIKE and Greeks. This started with
including PIKE in the name of our 5k. The philanthropy committee worked long hours promoting
the event to the community via Facebook, flyers around campus and local businesses, word of
mouth, tabling at the school's life center, ads posted on every pizza box leaving a local pizza
company's store two weeks prior, and even just walking around with flyers and talking to people
about what we are doing and why we are doing it. To top everything off our philanthropy director
had a live interview with the local ABC news station on their morning show to talk about the
5k/dog walk, who it was supporting, and why we were doing it. This provided some great PR for
PIKE, Camp Hobe, and Labs for Liberty.
One of our goals was to diversify this event and attract people from outside the Greek
community. Another of our goals was to brand this event for the coming years and create a solid
foundation for the generations to come.
The race took place at Sugarhouse Park and involved two full laps around it. People began
showing up 8:30 and continued to arrive all the way up to the race start time at 10am. It was
great to see all the familiar faces, but even better to see the amount of non-Greeks and families
that showed up! Not to mention the interaction between the two while waiting for the race to
begin! Near the start line we had two information booths set up to promote Camp Hobe and
Labs for Liberty that were occupied by representatives of each organization. Next to the
information booths there was a Check-in and registration desk where people could also buy our
Love Pike 5k/dog walk shirts for 10 dollars. Overall this event was a great success bringing in
around $2500 dollars just from the online registrations.
