Feminist Movement
Feminism is the political economical and social
equality of the sexes.

Women in Media
Over sexualization

Over sexualization
To sexualize excessively
25.8 percent of females versus 4.7 percent of males were shown in sexy attire
23.6 percent of females versus 7.4 percent of males were shown partially nude
10.9 percent of females versus 2.5 percent of males were referred to as attractive
(Pugh Yi & Craig)
Feminists are working towards equal representation of women and men in the
media and getting rid of the over sexualization of women in the media

Underweight models
Most runway models meet the body mass index criteria for anorexia
(Lovett, 2012)
Feminists are encouraging women to embrace their bodies

Sexual Violence Towards Women

1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an
attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (RAINN)
2 million injuries and 1,300 deaths are caused each year as
a result of domestic violence (CDC)

Thanks to Feminism, the FBI

definition of rape has now changed to
include both male and female victims.

Rape Culture
What is rape culture?
the way that we collectively think about rape its situations
in which sexual assault, rape, and general violence are
ignored, trivialized, normalized, or made into jokes
(Ridgway)

How does feminism help?

Mainly by addressing and fighting against it, it is an ideology,
not a physical thing.

Examples of Rape Culture

A Canadian University student orientation chant: Y is for your sister. O is for oh-so-tight. U is for underage. N is for no consent. G is for grab
that ass.

U.S. Senator Richard Mourdock stating that A pregnancy conceived in rape is something that God intended to happen."

The continuing defense of celebrities who have been found to be rapists.

Slut Walks
Began in 2011, in Canada.

Weve always encouraged people to be comfortable in how they approach things, respond to things,
how they dress and in who they are. There is no prescription on what someone involved in SlutWalk
needs to look like, be like, say, do or identify as. We dont all look alike, we dont all act alike, we dont
all come from the same experiences or identities but we can fight together and make things change

Womens Choice Rights- Abortions

Roe vs. Wade(1972)
This case fueled controversy within
individual states

Planned Parenthood vs.

Casey(1992)
Herbert vs. Planned
Parenthood(2015)
Reality of Planned
Parenthood

State Boundaries
States are getting stricter
requirements:
1. Counseling
2. Waiting periods
3. Doctor and hospital
4. Gestational limits
5. Parental involvement
6. Partial-birth abortions
7. State funding

Pro-choicers now define abortion as an intensely personal experience that no man can judge.
Since when has biology determined the arenas in which human beings can make moral
judgments?-Bella Abzug
They believe abortions are a family matter and politicians have no right to be involved(Bayles
1990.)
