Thedownlinkbroadcastframeisresentatregularintervalsbytheaircraftforaspecificperiodtime,atanominalrateof1Hz.Itincludesthe
transmissionofExtendedSquittertheunsoliciteddownlinkbroadcastofpositionalreports.Thesystemdependsonotheraircraftsystems,likea
barometricencoderandGPSequipmentforthepositiondata.
ThepreambleoftheModeSdownlinkallowsasynchronisationtoaclockfordecodingtheDataBlockwhichiscodedwiththePulsePosistion
Modulation(PPM).TheDataformatofanADSBmessageistheformatnumberDF17.ThecontentofthedatafieldDFisherethedecimalnumber17,in
binarycode10001b.

Thethreefollowingbits(calledCapability,orCA)istthenumberofsubtypeoftheADSBmessage.Thelength3bitgiveseightdifferentkindsof
reports.Thenext24bitsaretheindividualAircraft(ICAO)Address.ThenextDatafieldof56bitsisthecarrieroftheADSBreport,dependingonthe
contentoftheCAfield.
Thisreportcaninclude:
aircrafttypeandaircraftID
altitude,
encodedlatitude,
encodedlongitude(bothcoarse),and
airbornevelocity.
Thelast24bitsaretheerrordetectioncode(ParityInformation,PI).
