The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
1) Review plant parts, needs and life cycle.
ask: What are some things plants are used for? Have students share.
2) We are going to be taste-tester scientist today! A lot of the food we eat comes
from plants. I am going to give you a partner and plate. On your plate there is 6
different food items, and each comes from a different part of the plant. Your job is to
figure out what part of the plant each food item is from and why you thing that.
Write it down with your partner.
on plate:
-carrots (root)
-spinach (leaves)
-celery (stem)
-broccoli (flower)
-sunflower seed (seed)
-tomatoes (fruit
-when most students seem to be done, call them to rug and discuss which food
belonged to what plant part.

3) We eat things from each part of the plant! Next we are going to find items in our
room that are made from/with plants. Quietly write down on sticky note everything
you can find in the classroom that is made from a plant, besides our veggie plates
(desk, cabinets, pencils, clothes, books, paper, folders, tables, behind walls, door,
etc.)
4) Give students about 10 minutes to search around room from objects, then call to
rug.

5) Students circle around chart with 4 different sections. Each student shares one
object they found around room and how they know it came from a pant, then write it
under correct section.

Closure

6) Have a class discussion how humans use plants for food, shelter, clothes, and
oxygen/to breathe.
Ask:
Why is it important to take care of plants?
What would happen if we didnt take care of plants?
What do plants do for humans?
WE NEED PLANTS TO SURVIVE!

Your reflection on the lesson including ideas for improvement for next time:
This was my favorite lesson to teach from the plants unit! It was so fun and the students
loved it. During this lesson there were 2 interventionist in our room, and they both
commented on what great interactive lesson it was. The students had a great time being
taste testers and really worked together to decide what part of plant it came from. The
students also seemed to enjoy finding objects around the classroom made from plants. While
we were talking at the end, several students commented they didnt know plants were
everywhere in our lives and classroom. They seemed to understand why plants are so
important and how much they do for humans. The only difficult part of this lesson was one
student had a meltdown. This is a common occurrence with this student, so sometimes we
just take the class into the hallway so the other student does not distract them. I had to take
the class in the hallway for a bit, which interrupted the flow of things, but the students did a
pretty good job trying to focus!
