CarlFriedrichGausswasaGermanMathematicianwholivedfrom17771855.Gaussisone
ofhistorysmostsignificantmathematicians.Hemademajorcontributionsinnumbertheory,
geometry,statistics,planetaryastronomy,opticsandgeophysics.
Asthestorygoes,asayoungboybetweentheagesof810,histeacherJ.G.Buttner,triedto
occupyhisstudentsbymakingthemaddalonglistofintegers.TheyoungGaussreportedly
producedthecorrectanswerwithinsecondstotheastonishmentofhisteacher.Gausssawthat
thefirstandlasttermaddedto101,andthen2+99=101and3+98=101,withthepattern
continuinguntilthemiddletwoterms.Hequicklymultipliedthe50pairsof101togetthesumof
5050.Thisapproachisthefoundationfortheformulaofthesumofanarithmeticsequence.
GaussstudiedatGottingenUniversityfrom17951798andlaterspenthislifeworkingthere
asaprofessorofmathematicsanddirectoroftheobservatory.In1796,atonly19yearsofage,
Gausshadoneofhisbreakthroughdiscoveries.Hediscoveredthataheptadecagon,a
17sidedpolygoncouldbeconstructedwithacompassandastraightedge.Thiswasoneofthe
mostmajoradvancementsinthisfieldsincethetimeoftheGreekmathematicians.
InJanuary1801,theItalianG.PiazzihadobservedandthenlostanewplanetcalledCeres.
GausstookonthechallengetorelocateCeres.Hedidsobyusingamoreaccurateorbit
theory,basedontheellipseinsteadoftheusualcircleandwithanimprovednumericalmethod,
knownastheleastsquaresmethod.
AlthoughGausswassuccessfulinseveralfieldsofmathematicsandscience,numbertheory
washisfavorite.In1801,at24yearsofage,GausspublishedhisbookDisquisitiones
Arithmeticae,regardedtodayasoneofthemostinfluentialmathematicsbookseverwritten.It
laidthefoundationforModernNumberTheory.
OftenreferredtoasthePrinceofMathematics,GausshasbeenhonoredinGermanywith
hisfaceonthe10DeutschemarknoteandwithamonumentinhishometownofBrunswick,
Germany.Thepedestalofthemonumentissaidtobeintheshapeofaheptadecagon.
Gausshadmanyothersignificantcontributionsinthefieldsofmathandscience.Hismotto
wasPaucasedmatura,whichmeansfewbutripe.Gaussdidnotbelieveinpublishingany
workthathedidnotdeemperfectandabovecriticism.Becauseofthismotto,many
unpublishedworksofhiswerefoundwhenhedied.Thisextendedhisinfluenceinmathand
sciencewellpasthisdeath.
