ME 601 Stress Analysis - Home work 12(b) Due Date 4 Nov 2015
1. A torque T is applied to a thin-walled tube having a cross section in the shape of a regular
hexagon with constant wall thickness t and side length b (see figure). Obtain formulas for the
shear stress and the angle of twist.

.
2. Derive the relationship between the applied torque T and the angle of twist for a closed tube with
two attached fins.

3. Find expressions for the shear stresses in a tube of the section shown in the figure, the wall
thickness being uniform,

4. C. Weber proposed an elementary method of examining the effects of a circular groove or slot in
a circular bar by considering a Prandtl stress function in the form,

5. A torsion bar has a cross section in the shape of an isosceles triangle of height h and base 2b,
with h>>b. Let (x,y) axes be defined such that the origin is at the center of the base, with the xaxis in the height direction. Define the torsion function to be = Gb 2 [1 ( y / b) 2 ] , based upon the
membrane of the cross section.
a) Derive the expressions for corresponding stress components.
b) Determine the formula for the torsional rigidity in the terms of G,b,h.
c) Examine the boundary conditions and discuss them.
