Art GLO (Component 8):UNITY: Students will create unity through
density and rhythm.
A. Families of shapes, and shapes inside or beside shapes, create
harmony.
B. Overlapping forms help to unify a composition.
C. Repetition of qualities such as colour, texture and tone produce
rhythm and balance.
D. A composition should develop the setting or supporting forms, as
well as the subject matter.
Art GLO (Purpose 3): PURPOSE 3: Students will decorate items
personally created.
A. Details, patterns or textures can be added to two-dimensional
works.
B. Details, patterns or textures can be added to
the surface of three-dimensional works.
Social Studies Dimensions of Thinking:
- Critical thinking and creative thinking - evaluate ideas and
information from different points of view.
-

Cooperation, conflict resolution and consensus building demonstrate cooperative behaviour to ensure that all members
of the group have an opportunity to participate

Oral, written and visual literacy - organize and present

information, such as written and oral reports, taking particular
audiences and purposes into consideration

Time: 80 minutes.
Objective: The students will cut out the shapes for a snowman from
paper, glue them down on paper, then add textured details to the
snowmen.
Assessment (Formative or Summative?): Formative assessment.
Asking questions to gauge understanding. Watching for looks and body
language.
I will also use their worksheets to see what they have checked off and
what they have not checked off to gauge for understanding. Out of the
moment of the actual lesson, I would also like to ask a few students
whether or not they enjoyed the activity, just to get an understanding
of what types of activities they like.

Materials: Black base paper, white paper to cut, buttons, felt, sequins,
glue, scissors, pencil, white pencil crayons.
I can
- I can cut and paste.
- I can make a snowman out of paper.
- I can add details to my snowman.
- I can make connections between snowmen, winter, and cold
weather.
Introduction (10 minutes):
- Have students come to the carpet, discuss that we are going to
do art and that it will be a little bit different.
- Explain we will be making something really cool, but you have
to follow the step by step directions to make it beautiful!
- Explain that we need to cut and glue nicely and that I will go
along and do steps with them.
Activity (60 minutes including a dance break):
- As I go through the steps I will be showing them as well (visual
and auditory examples).
- There are some pretty cool things we could use, but we cant use
too much, we have to share, and we cant take them home!
- Take your white pencil crayons and write your name on the back
of your black paper
- Go to your tables and get out your scissors and glue The rest of
the supplies will be on the tables already.
- Cut out along the lines of the BIG circle, now lets glue it down
on the bottom of your black paper.
- Repeat for middle size circle and small circle.
- Cut out the brown arms for the snowman and glue them
attached to the middle circle on either side.
- Lets cut out the red hat and the red scarf (already mapped out
on the page for them, just need to cut on the lines.)
- Dance Break
- There will be other materials on the table already
- Now I want you to add some buttons on the snowman
- You can use your white pencil crayon, or some other materials
like sequins to add snow to your page. If you use sequins, just
put one tiny dab of glue on it to glue it down
- What is the last thing we should add? A NOSE!!! So now I want
you to pick whatever you want from the little bucket to make his
nose.
Closure (10 minutes):

Clean up all of your supplies, bring the containers of extra things

to the horseshoe table, hand in your art to me, and go back to
your seats quietly.

Alternatives:
- For those who need help with cutting, their peers who finish
faster can help (I will explain this before we start, that helpers
are awesome!)
- T and N will be in table groups with people who will help them.
- For those who finish way before we are ready for the next step,
they can either help others or (not sure need some extra help
with other ideas here)
- If finished early we can sing frosty the snowman with the
youtube repeat after me song.
