Currently,Idropoffafeedbackformtoeachoftheteachersformystudents
approximately6weeksbeforetheIEPisscheduled.Ieitherpersonallygivethe
formtotheteachersandbrieflydiscussitorIleavetheformintheirmailbox.
Responsesfromtheseformshavebeenmixedanddonotalwaysprovidethe
informationthatIneedtoprovidequantitativedataforprogressmonitoringand
developinggoalsfortheIEP.Someteachersprovidegreatdetails,whileothers
provideheisagreatkidorsheisdoingwell.Itrytofollowupwiththose
teacherstoprovidegreaterstructureastothedatathatIamlookingfor,butsome
ofourgeneraleducationteachersstruggletocollectgooddataforstudentswith
disabilitiesastheyareunsureabouthowtheyshouldmodifyoraccommodatethese
studentsintheirdailylessons.Ihavefoundthatdiscussionsgivemealotofgreat
anecdotalinformationaboutbehavior,attendance,focusandparticipation,butnota
lotofqualitydatathatismeasureableandquantifiable.ThisisanareathatIam
strugglinginastheinformationreallyisneededtotrulyprovidethelearning
supportthatmystudentsneedandareentitledtounderthelaw.
Icommunicatewiththeparents/caregivers/guardiansofmystudentsonamonthly
basistocommunicatethegood,thebadandtheugly.Icommunicatemoreoften
whenneededtomakeapositivecallhomeoracallhometoaddressaparticular
issuesuchasattendance,behavior,classwork,homework,failinggradesoragreat
success.ThisisanareainwhichIhaveachievedsuccessinincludingthefamilyasa
partoftheteam,notjustatthetimetheIEPisdue,butonaregularbasistosupport
theirchildseducationalprogressandgoals.Thiscommunicationhasitschallenges
asmanyofmystudentsfamiliesdonotwanttobelievethattheirchildis
consistentlycuttingclass,refusingtodoclassorhomeworkorsleepingthrough
classes.However,withamixofpositivecallshomeonthegooddays,rapport
buildinghappensandtheparentbecomesavaluablepartoftheteamthatcancarry
overexpectationsandsupportthestudentathome.
Goingforward,Iwouldliketospendtimewithourgeneraleducationteachers
helpingthemtounderstandthedatanecessarytomonitorIEPgoalssothat
measurementcanbecomemorecurriculumbasedandlessbasedonanarbitrary
readingormathprobe.Ibelievethatcurriculumbasedmonitoringisafarbetter
pictureofthetrueprogressaswellasexposureofstrengthsandareasofneedasit
isabiggerpictureandnotanarbitraryprobethatisgivenonadaythatIchoose.I
wouldliketomovetowardsmorecurriculumbasedgoalsandawayfromgoalson
anAimsWebbreadingormathprobe.Iwillalsocontinuetobuildrelationships
withfamiliesandcaregiverstosupporttheirengagementandinvolvementasa
valuablememberoftheIEPteam.Caregiverfeedbackhasgivenmealotofinsight
intomystudentsthatImightnototherwisehave.Buildingateamwithmystudents
familiesandgeneraleducationteachersandbuildingbridgesthatallowforgreater
andmoreregularcommunicationamongallofuswillonlybenefitourstudentsin
thelongrun.
