STORYTELLING
LESSON PLAN |
DURATION: 50 MINS

Course Description
ASL Storytelling skills will be evaluated using role
shifting, appropriate placement of the story
elements, and movements of people/items.
Students will gain confidence in storytelling
techniques.
Course Outcomes

Lesson Activity
Incorporate ASL vocabulary correctly when
creating an ASL
story and when responding to questions about an
ASL story told by someone else.
Students will choose a story from Signing
Naturally DVD/Book. Students will retell an ASL
story based on stories viewed on Level 1 DVD in
class in ASL.
Students will also respond to questions about
ASL stories by the instructor.
Comprehension and production tests with
rubrics to show appropriate ASL grammar and
comprehension for movement of characters and

objects, continuity, character development, and


special features when sharing or responding to
an ASL story.
Opening (10 minutes): Teacher will show three
different videos from SN DVD.
Activities
(20 minutes) Student will choose which story.
Student will get handout from teacher on specific
videos to answer about the story selected.
Character and if in first person, second person
or third person point of view (POV).
Kind of personality & appearance of the
character
Basic storyline written out
Draw a map/stage of where story occurred
Teacher will check papers and make sure students
have the story correct before starting next
activity.
(30 minutes) Students will practice story by
him/herself then tell story to a partner. Each
student will have a rubric to evaluate partner.
For homework assignment: Student will sign
story on video and submit self-assessment.
Assessment: Teacher will view all stories and
give feedback to students (GoReact). Students
may need to retell if not meeting rubric

expectation (at least 3 out of 5 in all 4 areas


(correct concept, correct sign production, correct
placement of the storyline, and comprehension of
the story).
