CHAPLAINCY NEWS

Meet our new

Chaplaincy Team

is now also working for Sacred Heart in Hove. Claire and

Mary-Ann have just moved to Brighton to join Wellspring to
spend a year sharing their lifestyle in order to learn more
about youth work and discern about their futures.

Who are the new

Chaplaincy team?
Chaplaincy at Newman is now
being run by the Wellspring
Community. The Wellspring is
a Catholic community seeking
to live the Gospel of Christ,
with the Rule of St Benedict as
our guide. Living a common
life of prayer and service, we
seek to witness to the Kingdom of God in the city of
Brighton, welcoming others in
to encounter with Christ, and
reaching out to share the presence of Christ in the wider
community. The members of the Chaplaincy team are John
Wright, Lara Merk, Mary-Ann Enriquez and Claire Barrie.
What is your past experience?
John has been a youth worker/school chaplain for the last 5
years whilst completing a degree in youth work and practical theology. He has just moved to Brighton with his wife
and two children. Lara has been working and living in the
diocese all her life, as a youth worker, Red Shirt leader and

The Advent
Giving Tree
As part of our Advent
preparation, we have once
again been supporting a
local charity - Project Antifreeze, a Christian charity
offering spiritual, practical
and emotional support to
the homeless in Brighton &
Hove. We have been asking our students to take a
giving star from our Advent Giving Tree and re-

turn the gift unwrapped to

a box in the Chapel. We
will then present the gifts
to the charity at our Advent Carol Service on
Thursday 17th December.

What is your role within the school?

As a Chaplaincy team we are responsible for running daily
Mass within the school. We have an hour with a different
form each day to celebrate Mass and offer catechesis to
help students understand and engage in the Mass and their
faith journeys. At the beginning of the year we run 'focus
days' for Year 7 forms as part of their induction as well as
running a retreat at the end of this process. We support the
school with all of the charity projects that happen throughout the year. We also run assemblies on the different liturgical seasons and feasts. We support the charity 'Off the
Fence' who come in and run weekly lunch time clubs and
annual prayer spaces during exam season. We also offer
trips to Taize and Lourdes in the summer.
What exciting projects have you got coming up?
We are currently working with the Sixth form to develop
the Chaplaincy provision for them, looking at developing
their prayer room, running a Sixth Form mission into one of
the local primary schools and developing the prayer life of
the college. We are also looking at the possibility of running
a monthly prayer evening in school for all students.

Supporting Marys Meals

We have once again been selling
Christmas Cards to support Marys
Meals, a Charity whose vision is that
every child receives one daily meal in
their place of education. These lifechanging meals attract hungry children
into the classroom. The food fills their
empty tummies so they have the energy and opportunity to learn, giving them the chance of a
brighter future. Our Year 7 and 8 students have also been
on a big fundraising effort using their Marys Meals mugs to
raise vital funds for the Charity.

Advent Carol Service

We look forward to holding our annual Advent Carol Service on Thursday 17th December
in our Chapel.
Our choirs and extra-curricular music groups have prepared a beautiful selection of music
as well as traditional Christmas carols. All will be performed by candlelight at this free ticketed event.

We wish you a Happy and Holy Christmas!
