CHILD ABUSE JOB AIDE

List the steps to take if you suspect abuse or neglect. What information will you need? What will you do?
First talk to the child ask him/her questions about what happened
If you suspect child abuse or neglect, immediately report by phone or in person to CPS or the local police.
You do not need proof or need to be absolutely certain - you only need a reasonable suspicion. It is the
responsibility of the county department or law enforcement agency to determine if maltreatment has occurred.

Explain your role as a mandated reporter including why it is your responsibility to report suspected child abuse and
neglect.
If there is suspected child abuse and neglect, it is our job as a mandated reporters to contact the police or CPS
immediately because we could save a life. Do not wait to see if there is continued signs of abuse or neglect; because by
that time it may be too late.

Type of Abuse

Signs & Symptoms

Physical
Neglect/abuse

Begs or steals for food or money, is constantly dirty and has sever body odor, lacks sufficient
clothing for the weather, bruising, welts on face, neck, chest, or back, unexplained burns,
afraid to go home, unexplained fractures, fearful of adults.

Medical Neglect

Lack needed medical or dental care, immunizations, or glasses.

Educational Neglect

Absent from school.

Emotional
Neglect/abuse

Child shows extremes in behavior, is physically or emotionally delayed, lack of attachment to


parents, is constantly blamed and put down, extreme willingness to please.

Sexual abuse

Difficulty walking or sitting, sudden change in appetite, demonstrates sexual knowledge,


attaches quickly to strangers, refuses to change for gym or participate in physical activities,
bruising,

Abandonment

Sates that no one is at home to provide for their care.

Substance abuse

Changes in behavior or school performance, passive or withdrawn.
