Whats Your Spirit Animal?

By: Ashley Powers

Since our mascot at Holman Middle School is a husky, an animal,

I decided it was only fair to know what the students inner animal is (spirit
animal). A spirit animal carries meaning, wisdom, and power. Finding out
what your spirit animal or totem means is like a going on a journey. Meanings
will be revealed as you deepen your personal connection with it. You go
beyond generic animal symbolism and connect with the true essence of your
power animal. After I explained to the students in the Journalism class they
quickly gave me a response with a reasonable explanation to back their
response up. Later on I realized this question relates to our all Holman reads
book, Touching Spirit Bear. The teen in the book Cole has to discover
himself just like the middle schoolers in this book discover what their spirit
animal is. Finally, I did get some good responses, here are some of the
answers.

Jordan J, Grade 7: Im a horse because Im fast, strong, free-spirited,

independent, and smart.
Mrs. Harris, Teacher: Im a koala because Im cute and fuzzy unless
disturbed.
Mia B, Grade 6: Im a dog because theyre a good animal! They have a
great personality.
Christine E, Grade 8: I am a tiger because they are fast, strong, and
fearless.
Zoha R, Grade 8: Im an eagle because I feel that eagles and I are freespirited.

Serena G, Grade 7: Im a puppy because they are playful.

Brooklyn B, Grade 7: A bird because theyre nice and beautiful.
Natalie F, Grade 6: A horse due to the fact that I ride them!
Taylor C, Grade 6: Im a fox because Im sneaky and clever.
Carmen B, Grade 8: Im a huskie because I go to Holman.
Ashlynn O, Grade 7: Probably a sloth because they seem shy, but their
very friendly once you meet them.
Kaylee T, Grade 8: Hmm, probably a peacock because they love to be the
in the spotlight! I love being in the spotlight when I act.
Ava D, Grade 6: A kangaroo because they are always happy and ready to
do anything!

After talking with the students about what their spirit animal was I ended up
with a variety of answers. Some of the popular answers were independent,
smart, and free-spirited. Some of the unpopular answers were fragile,
graceful, talented, strong, and playful. It feels like from these answers that
most of the students are risks-takers. The unpopular answers seems like
those students are kind of the underdog/background types. It shows you how
different the students at Holman are.
