Education in a democratic
society compared to education in
China
Democratic education begins with the thinking
that every student has their own way of
learning.

The role and nature of education in a

democratic society is that people learn about
themselves, the society around them, and how
to become and act within that society.
Teaching and learning is different in a
democratic society. Students may work in:

Group projects
Have their own self-directed learning
Get to choose what they learn
Have the freedom to choose their schedules
They also have non-profit and after school
programs to help explore the outside
community around them.

School life in China is that they start school at 7 and

go to about 4pm. Elementary kids start at 7:30am.
Kids are taught things such as math, reading and
writing, as well as a few other classes.
Kids do not get to choose their classes.
Their education is based on their social class meaning
the more money a parent can spend the better their
education will be.
The schools are small and number of students per
teacher are large.
They have fields to play in at recess time.
They have a morning flag raise and they say the
national anthem, which is like saying the pledge to
them.
Education in china is required from the age of 6 to the
age of 15 and it is free. Once a child reaches high
school the parent must pay. However depending on
the social class students will either continue or stop
schooling.
Most rural students stop going to school at the age of
15.
