BONNIE AND CLYDE LEGEDS AND REALITY
Everyone has heard about Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, two criminals in the 1930s. They are
almost romantic legends. But what was reality? Young people of today know about bonnie and Clyde
from the film which was produced in 1967 and immediately became a success. The two criminals were
shown as a romantic pair who robbed banks but didnt steal from poor people. Here is the story how it
was in reality.
Clyde Barrow was born in 1910 near Dallas, Texas, the sixth of the eight children. His father was an
illiterate farmer. As a child, Clyde was fond of torturing small birds and animals. He hated school and
left it as soon as he could. At 17 he started stealing cars, robbing small stores and later banks. He
panicked in difficult situations and shot wildly, killing all people nearby. Ordinary people were afraid
of him, but professional criminals despised him. Bonnie Parker was also born near Dallas, in 1909. Her
parents were deeply religious people; they went to church, never drank or smoked. Bonnie was good at
school; she was slender and tall, but she could fight and beat older, bigger girls and boys. She worked
as a waitress for some time near Dallas, but then she lost her job and became unemployed. When she
met Clyde she fell in love with him at first glance. Soon he was arrested for robbery and she managed
to send a pistol to him in prison. He used it to escape.
