Back Water Curve it Definition, Causes, Condition and Diagram


Definition
The longitudinal profile of the water surface in a non-uniform flow in an open channel, when this
surface is not parallel to the invert due to increased depth of water as a result of an obstruction,
such as a dam or weir.
Causes
These curves are provided by keeping obstruction in the flow of water and the obstruction may
be weir or barrage
Condition
These curves are provided for gradually varied flow
In case of sub critical flow these are provided on mild Slope
In case of super critical flow they are provided on steep slope
