CONTEXT

TEACHING OF ESL AND CHILDRENS LITERATURE

Based on the classic childrens rhyme, Eileen Christelows version includes

lively illustrations and a few pages at the beginning describing the monkeys
getting ready to go to bed. One by one, each monkey falls off the bed and is
ordered by the doctor to stop jumping. In the end, the monkeys fall asleep
and their mama gets to go to bed too.

PRE-TELLING
ACTIVITY 1
Teacher explains that everyday we have a lot of actions. These
actions are very important for our health, for example: take a bath,
brush the teethso children have to research at home some actions
that they do and show the pictures to their partners. They have to
guess the actions.

TELLING
Correct the puppet
During the telling, teacher use a puppet to tell the story. This puppet,
sometimes, tell the story wrong and the students have to say the
correct word or information.

POST-TELLING
Activity 1
Teacher delivers flashcards every student. These flashcards are
different actions that the monkeys do in the story: take a bath; brush
the teeth, jumping on the bed, put on the pajama, etc. Teacher does
an action and the children have to stand up the correct flashcard.
Then, the children can do the actions and their partners guess the
action.
Activity 2
Pass the puppet
Children sit in a circle. Play music and children pass the puppet round
the circle. Whenever the teacher pauses the music, the child who has
the puppet tells an does an action.

Activity 3
Guess what the puppets thinking about
1. Put 3-6 flashcards on the floor or board. Use mime to convey that
the puppet is thinking about one of them. Encourage children to
guess which one.
2. Make the puppet shake its head and say No and then nod and say,
eg. Yes, brilliant! When a child guesses correctly.
