ActivityPromotionRequirements

ASHAApprovedCEProvidersarerequiredtoprovidepotentialparticipantsintheiractivitieswithwritten
informationthatidentifiestheApprovedCEProvideroftheactivityaswellastheactivitysCEUs,contentarea,and
instructionallevel.Thisinformationiscontainedinastandardpromotionalparagraphthatmustbeusedinall
promotionalmaterialrelatedtotheactivity.Thepromotionalparagraphmustbeusedaswritten.Inadditionto
therequiredpromotionalparagraph,theProvidermustuse theASHAApprovedCEProviderlogo.Thislogohelps
individualsidentifyactivitiesthatareofferedforASHACEUsbyanASHAApprovedCEProvider.SeetheSection4,
page119, RequirementsforPromotingASHA ContinuingEducationActivities, formoredetailsabout
promotionalrequirements,therequiredparagraph,andtheASHAApprovedCEProviderlogo.

ActivityComponentsIdentifiedinthePromotionalParagraph
Toprovideareliablebasisforparticipantstoselect qualitycontinuingeducationactivitiestomeettheirpersonal
learningneeds,theContinuingEducationBoardhasProviderscategorizecontinuingeducationactivitiesbycontent
area,instructionallevel,andnumberofCEUs all ofwhicharedescribedfurtherbelow.

ContentArea
CEactivitiesofferedforASHACEUsmustfallwithinoneormoreofthethreecontentareasdescribedbelow.
ActivitiesthatdonotfitinoneormoreofthecontentareasarenotappropriatetobeofferedforASHACEUs.
1. BasicCommunicationProcesses(B).Information(beyondthebasicASHAcertificationrequirements)
applicabletothenormaldevelopmentanduseofspeech,language,andhearing that is,
(a)anatomicand physiologicalbasesforthenormaldevelopmentanduseofspeech,language,and
hearing;(b)physicalbasesandprocessesoftheproductionandperceptionofspeech,language,and
hearing;(c)linguisticandpsycholinguisticvariablesrelatedtonormaldevelopmentanduseof
speech,language,andhearing;and(d)technological,biomedical,engineering,andinstrumentation
information(suchascomputerprogrammingandmicroprocessoradaptations)thatenableexpansion
ofknowledgeinthebasiccommunicationprocesses.
2. Professional(P).Informationpertainingtodisordersofspeech,language,andhearing for example,
(a)varioustypesofdisordersofcommunicationandtheirmanifestations,classifications,andcauses;
(b) evaluationskills,includingprocedures,techniques,andinstrumentationforassessment;and
(c)management proceduresandprinciplesinhabilitationandrehabilitationofcommunication
disorders.
3. Related (R).Studypertainingtotheunderstandingofhumanbehavior,bothnormalandabnormal,as
wellasservicesavailablefromrelatedprofessionsthatapplytothecontemporarypracticesof
speechlanguagepathologyand/oraudiology for example,(a)theoriesoflearningandbehavior;
(b) servicesavailablefromrelatedprofessionsthat alsodealwithpersonswhohavedisordersof
communication;(c)informationfromtheseprofessionsaboutthesensory,physical,emotional,
social,and/orintellectualstatusofachildoradult;and(d)suchotherareasasprogrammanagement,
economicsof professionalpractice,legislativeissues,professionalethics,clinicalsupervision,
counselingandinterviewing,applicationofcomputers,andmoderntechnologyandstatistics.

InstructionalLevel
Instructionallevelsaredescribedasfollows:
1. Introductory. Thislevelassumestheparticipanthaslittleornoknowledgewithintheareacovered.
Thefocusoftheactivityisongeneralorientationandincreasedawarenessoftheparticipant.
2. Intermediate. Thislevelassumesthattheparticipanthasageneralfamiliaritywiththeliteratureand
professionalpracticewithintheareacovered.Thefocusofthe activity isonincreasedunderstanding
andapplicationbytheparticipant.

3. Advanced. Thislevelassumestheparticipanthasfamiliaritywithknowledgeandprofessional
practice within theareacovered.Thisfocusoftheactivityisonincreasingfamiliaritywithfindingsin
thecurrentliteratureandmayalsoincludefuturedirections,theoreticalinformation,andtheclinical
andresearchapplications.
4. Various. Somecontinuingeducationactivitiescomprisetwoormorelevelsofinstruction.Ifmore
thanhalfoftheactivityfallswithintheIntroductory,Intermediate,orAdvancedlevelofinstruction,
theactivityshouldbeclassifiedinthatlevel.Iftheactivityismadeupofmanysessions(e.g.,
conventionorconference),allatvariouslevels,thentheactivityshouldbeclassifiedasVarious.
