2016 F.A.Q. for National History Day Judges
Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History
The 2016 History Day theme, “Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History,” inspired students to think about
topics from many different areas of history. Topics related to the exploration of new places, like Lewis and
Clark, were just the beginning of their creativity. These young historians have considered the exploration of
new tacholdgy'iA science or medicine. They have researched the impact of encounters between different
culfdrés or movéFhehts infthe arts, Students have examined the exchange of nat only money or goods in
history, but also exchange of ideas and diseases.
Students did not need to discuss all elements of this year’s theme in order to be successful. Students were
encouraged to consider ways that their topics may connect to exploration, encounter, and exchange, Their
topics, however, may connect to only one or two of these words. The flexibility of the theme allowed them to
pick a topic connected to their own interests for History Day.
