"There is definitely a conflict in the record as to who was the king at the time. The
scribe of Jeremiah 27:1-3 says that Zedekiah was not yet king, but scholars now
insist that he was wrong and that Zedekiah was ruling earlier than the Masoretic
text says he was, so 1 Nephi 1:4 may not be an anachronism." Hugh Nibley, Two

Anchor Bible Dictionary, Vol 6, page 1069-70 Zedekiah is portrayed in the book
of Jeremiah as too weak to do what he knows is right: three times during the
Babylonian siege Zedekiah approaches Jeremiah (Jer 37:1-10, 16-21; 38:14-28), but
faced with the opposition of officials, courtiers, and people, the king feels unable to
follow the prophets advice and to surrender to Nebuchadrezzar. Jeremiah nowhere
condemns Zedekiah, but he does denounce his advisers. The king, in fact, saves the
prophets life, though he cannot spare him imprisonment..Zedekiah was in a difficult
position. Nebuchadrezzar appointed him king, but many believed that Jehoiachin
would soon return and resume his rightful position as king of Judah (cf. Jer 28:4).
Jehoiachin himself no doubt bore such a hope (Jer 22:27). Jeremiah, however,
emphasized that God had rejected Jehoiachin who would never return (22:27).The
Bible portrays Zedekiah as a weak ruler who did not humble himself before Jeremiah
the prophet ( 2 Chr. 36:12), that is, did not repent and so led God to forgive and
restore.

For I will set mine eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again to
this land: and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant
them, and not pluck them up.
And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they
shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me
with their whole heart.
And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil;
surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give Zedekiah the king of
Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in
this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt:
And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth
for their hurt, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all
places whither I shall drive them.
And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them,
till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their
fathers.
Jeremiah 37:

And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of
Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of
Judah.

But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did
hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet
Jeremiah.

"In 596/5 B.C. Nebuchadrezzar was attacked by an unnamed enemy, possibly Elam.
In 595-4 he had to deal with a revolt within his own borders. In 594/3 he led a
military campaign into Syria. They were troubled times for Nebuchadrezzar, and
small states in the west thought they saw an opportunity to revolt and throw off the
yoke of Babylon. As it happened the plan was fruitless. Zedekiah became
involved, ... But in the same year, the fourth year of his reign, the king went to
Babylon (51:59), either because he was summoned or perhaps to re-pledge his

And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the
LORD, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjathjearim, who prophesied against this
city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah:
And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard
his words, the king sought to put him to death: but when Urijah heard it, he was
afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt;
And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, [namely], Elnathan the son of Achbor,
and [certain] men with him into Egypt.
And they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto Jehoiakim the
king; who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of
the common people.
Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they
should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.

1 Nephi 2:
For behold, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto my father, yea, even in a
dream, and said unto him: Blessed art thou Lehi, because of the things
which thou hast done; and because thou hast been faithful and declared
unto this people the things which I commanded thee, behold, they seek
to take away thy life.
And it came to pass that the Lord commanded my father, even in a dream,
that he should take his family and depart into the wilderness.
And it came to pass that he was obedient unto the word of the Lord, wherefore he
did as the Lord commanded him.
And it came to pass that he departed into the wilderness*. And he left his
house, and the land of his inheritance, and his gold, and his silver, and his
precious things, and took nothing with him, save it were his family, and provisions,
and tents, and departed into the wilderness.
And he came down by the borders near the shore of the Red Sea; and he
traveled in the wilderness in the borders which are nearer the Red Sea**;
and he did travel in the wilderness with his family, which consisted of my mother,
Sariah, and my elder brothers, who were Laman, Lemuel, and Sam.
*Other refugee groups in the wilderness: "Jeremiah was the champion of the
Rechabites (Jeremiah 35) and his assistants (cf. 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch) both headed
such communities of refugees. Lehi is definitely doing the accepted thing for men of
God in his time. That the Rekhabite ideal of the desert sectaries was in full flower in
Lehi's day, as many other sources now indicate, is clear from the accusation that
Nephi's elder brothers brought against him, that he was planning to set up such a
society with himself as ' our ruler and our teacher...'leading them by his false claims
of prophetic inspiration to believe ' that the Lord has talked with him... thinking,
perhaps, that he may lead us away into some strange wilderness [some unoccupied
tract]; and after he has led us away, he has thought to make himself a king and a

And it came to pass that when he had traveled three days in the wilderness, he
pitched his tent in a valley by the side of a river of water.
And it came to pass that he built an altar of stones, and made an offering unto the
Lord, and gave thanks unto the Lord our God.
And it came to pass that he called the name of the river, Laman, and it emptied
into the Red Sea; and the valley was in the borders near the mouth thereof.
And when my father saw that the waters of the river emptied into the fountain of
the Red Sea, he spake unto Laman, saying: O that thou mightest be like unto this
river, continually running into the fountain of all righteousness!
And he also spake unto Lemuel: O that thou mightest be like unto this valley, firm
and steadfast, and immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord!
Now this he spake because of the stiffneckedness of Laman and Lemuel; for behold
they did murmur in many things against their father, because he was a
visionary man, and had led them out of the land of Jerusalem, to leave the land
of their inheritance, and their gold, and their silver, and their precious things, to
perish in the wilderness. And this they said he had done because of the foolish
imaginations of his heart.
And thus Laman and Lemuel, being the eldest, did murmur against their father.
And they did murmur because they knew not the dealings of that God who had
created them.
Neither did they believe that Jerusalem, that great city, could be destroyed
according to the words of the prophets. And they were like unto the Jews who were
at Jerusalem, who sought to take away the life of my father.

taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions

people that they must repent, or the great city Jerusalem must be destroyed.

19 And it came to pass that the Jews did mock him because of the things which
he testified of them; for he truly testified of their wickedness and their
abominations; and he testified that the things which he saw and heard, and also
the things which he read in the book, manifested plainly of the coming of the
Messiah, and also the redemption of the world.
20 And when the Jews heard these things they were angry with him; yea, even
as with the prophets of old, whom they had cast out, and stoned, and slain; and
they also sought his life, that they might take it away. But behold, I, Nephi, will
show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he

of deliverance.
