Why Is It
Important To
Drink
Water?
o Carry oxygen
in your blood to
make your muscles work.
o Helps you to digest your food.
o Helps you to go to the bathroom
and clear your body.
o When you sweat it takes out the
water so you need water to
replace it.
o Helps your brain function.
o It regulates your body
temperature to help you cool
down while participating in sports
and activities.

o It takes six and a half years for the average American


residence to use the amount of water required to fill
an Olympic-sized swimming pool (660,000 gallons).

o Water covers 70.9% of the Earths surface.

o Taking a bath requires up to 70 gallons of water. A


five-minute shower uses only 10 to 25 gallons.
o Over 713 gallons of water go into the production of
one cotton T-shirt.
o 1000 gallons of water are required to produce 1
gallon of milk.
o American residents use about 100 gallons of water
per day.
o Approximately 400 billion gallons of water are used in
the United States per day.
o There are 21,133,764 cups of water in an Olympic size

How Much Water


Do You Need A
Day?

The average Person needs 8 cups of


water a day.
If you are doing physical activity you
need to drink more water.
For kids who are doing physical
activity the rule of thumb is add 2
cups per hour of physical activity.
If you are 7 years old and playing
tag for 1 hour, how many cups of
water should you drink that day?
Answer: 10 Cups!

How Much Water Is In Your Body?


Your body is made up of 70% water!

Dangers of
Dehydration
o Dehydration is when you lose more water
than you are drinking.
o Symptoms of Dehydration are:
-sleepiness
-headache
-diarrhea
-increased thirst
-lack of urination
o What should you do if you notice yourself
getting dehydrated?
-drink water but not too fast
-decrease activity
If it gets worse, seek help!

Hydration and
Swimming

o Two cups for every hour you


swim!

o An hour before swimming drink


one to three cups of water!
o Drink a couple sips during your
water break!
o Make sure to take a water break
every 15-20minutes.
o Drink slowly to avoid stomach
ache.
o After swimming drink 2-3 cups of
water if you are hot and
temperatures are high to help
cool you down.
